Susan (Sue) A. Evans (Phillips), age 70, passed away unexpectedly in Ellsworth after a short illness on Sept. 28, 2020. She was born to Estella (Poole) and Roby Phillips on Sept. 29, 1949, near Owings Mills, Md.
Sue’s interest in science brought her to the University of Maryland’s College Park and Baltimore County campuses, earning a master’s degree in computer science and building a career teaching it. Her kindness, encouragement and talent for explaining foundations of a technical field touched the lives of thousands of UMBC’s students. In 2011, she retired as a senior lecturer emerita, and later moved to the Downeast Maine coast, where she had summered with her husband, Benjamin. She spent her last years visiting Acadia, doing cross-stitch and building friendships in the Ellsworth community.
Sue is survived by daughter Theresa Dower (Bogar) and son-in-law Michael of Catonsville, Md., and many stepchildren, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Ben.
Services for Susan were held at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth on Friday, Oct. 2, 2020, with Bob Maddocks officiating. A recording can be viewed at www.jordanfernald.com.
