
ELLSWORTH
Meredith (Marsh) Schoppee, 82, passed away peacefully, with her husband at her side, on Aug. 20, 2020, at Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor. The daughter of Samuel James and Doris (Torrey) Marsh, she was born on May 8, 1938, in Bangor. She lived in Norfolk, Mass., for 43 years before moving to Corea, and then Ellsworth in 2011.
Meredith graduated from Norwood High School (Norwood, Mass.) in the Class of 1956. She continued her education at MIT, where she had the distinct honor of being one of the first female students in attendance. After having her family, she conducted textile research on felts and other industrial textile materials at Albany International Corp. for 36 years. She was a member and past president of The Fiber Society, an organization of professional scientists that studied fiber-based products. In her free time, Meredith loved to read. She also enjoyed taking photographs and watching the birds and other animals that visited her garden.
Meredith leaves behind her husband of 60 years, William Everett Schoppee of Ellsworth; her daughter, Pamela Dale Schoppee Bortz, and her husband, Christopher Allen Bortz, of Charlottesville, Va.; her son, William James Schoppee of Medway, Mass.; and her grandson, William Andrew Schoppee of Brighton, Mass. She was predeceased by her sister, Priscilla A. Marsh.
An informal gathering of friends and family to remember Meredith’s life will be held at her home in Ellsworth on a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that you donate to the Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mt. Hope Avenue, Bangor, ME 04402.
