ELLSWORTH
David Juel Harriman, 65, passed away on July 1, 2020. He was born Aug. 16, 1954, to the late Charlotte (Johnson) Davis and Lawrence Harriman.
David was a graduate of Ellsworth High School. David was known by many to be “larger than life.” While he had many internal struggles throughout his life, those who truly knew him knew his heart to be pure and true despite his challenges and shortcomings here on Earth. Those closest to him knew these things to be true: David loved and cherished his children more than anything. While his love for his children and value of family exceeded his capacity in this life, he always made it a point to tell them and anyone else who asked (or would listen) just how proud he was of the things they were each accomplishing and who they had become.
He was an avid fisherman, by trade and by hobby, and found solace in the ocean, above or below the surface. The sea was where he was most comfortable and content. He took great pride in his knowledge and understanding of “The Hungry Ocean.” He was a proud descendant of Norwegian immigrants and held that heritage close to his heart and passed it along to his children, by word and in some cases blond locks. He loved to read and was especially inspired by local Maine author Linda Greenlaw. He was a dog lover to the extreme, and always kept a canine companion that he would play with and shower with love in the best of times, and that could walk beside him through the darkest. His most recent companion was a wire-haired terrier mix named Bojangles (Bobo), who he would proudly declare he had “bailed out of jail” after seeing him on a local SPCA commercial and couldn’t resist. Bobo remained with him until his last moments of life, and will now stay with David’s sister Lisa.
David leaves behind a wonderful family including three sons, Robert Juel Harriman and his wife, Lacey Rain; Dr. Erik Juel Harriman and his wife, Grace, and their daughter, Naomi Juel Harriman; and Travis Juel Harriman and his fiancée, Amanda Rivas; his daughter, Lacey Schlag, her husband, David, and their son Casey; his brothers, Malcom and Bryan; his sister, Lisa; as well as many nieces and nephews.
David’s family will be having a private ceremony for him, most likely on the waves of Blue Hill Bay.
