ELLSWORTH
Kip Alexander Cameron died unexpectedly at his home on June 26, 2020, in Ellsworth. He was born January 24, 1960, in Freeport, N.Y., the son of the late Dr. Harlow J. and Edith “Babette” (Nichols) Cameron.
Kip graduated from Mount Desert Island High School, Class of 1978, and Husson University, 1982. After graduating college, Kip moved to New York City to pursue his love of theater and film, becoming an actor studying under the renowned teacher Fred J. Kareman at Carnegie Hall. Kip played roles in television and several commercials in New York City, Italy and Venezuela, and taught English as a second language for Petroleos de Venezuela in Caracas and privately in Rome. While in Rome, Kip lived near the Colosseum and designated himself the “Catman of Rome,” feeding the innumerable feral cats he loved. In 1996, Kip married and moved to St. Louis, Mo., where he began working for American Airlines and TWA. In 2011, Kip returned to Maine and worked at Darling’s Auto Mall in Ellsworth and enjoyed spending time with his great friends and family. Kip had recently been recording the poetry of his friend, Phil Wormuth, for an international website.
Kip was an exceptionally gifted athlete but also firmly believed in relentless practice. His first Little League baseball game was playing for the Morang Robinson Red Sox in Bar Harbor. His love of baseball continued throughout his school years playing for both the University of Maine and Husson University culminating as semi-professional baseball coach for the Downeast Yankees. Kip was also a YMCA State Champion swimmer, an avid tennis and ping pong player, and excelled at football and basketball. He was inducted into the Mount Desert Island High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018. Kip also loved fly-fishing, spending time at the family home in Pennsylvania at Pocono Lake Preserve and he adored his animals, naming both cats and dogs after the Red Sox Dream Team of 1967.
Friends and family will remember Kip’s comical sense of humor, his love of film and penchant for mimicking celebrities and his kindness toward all creatures great and small.
Kip is survived by his son, Nikolai Cameron of Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal; mother, Babette Cameron of Stonington; older brother, Ian Cameron, and partner, Marcie Greene; and niece, Miriam Cameron of Glenburn; sister, Dale Cameron DesMeules, and husband, Mark, of Alna; and special friend, Brenda Amino of Bradenton, Fla.
A future gathering in Kip’s memory will be planned when circumstances allow mass gatherings.
Donations in Kip’s memory may be made to The Ark Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 276, Cherryfield, ME 04622.
