SURRY

Seldon “Ari” Bernstein passed away at home on March 4, 2020. He was born in Bangor Jan. 3, 1926. In Ari’s 94 years, he contributed to his community in so many ways; he served in the Navy, was a founder of College of the Atlantic and was an active Rotarian.

He was an esteemed hematologist and researcher at The Jackson Lab. Ari spent more than 30 years there discovering treatments including bone marrow replacement and stem cell renewal. Ari also spent time researching some of the world’s most destructive blood diseases, like hemolytic anemia.

Ari was the proud father of four children and three grandchildren, who are spread throughout the world and thriving in their own unique ways.

For the past 40 years, he was a painter whose love for the color purple and sharp angles can be seen in most of his work. Ari spent most days contemplating what to paint next or how one brush stroke could completely change the message of his art.

We would like to hold a casual service for Ari, so please wear jeans!

Friends are invited to call from 1-2 p.m., Saturday, March 14, 2020, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with a service to follow at 2 p.m. Light refreshments will follow at Ari’s home, 28 Contention Cove Lane, Surry, ME 04684.

Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.
