ELLSWORTH

Gary Wilson Googins, 65, died Feb. 20, 2020, at a Blue Hill hospital surrounded by his family. He was born in Bar Harbor, April 20, 1954, son of Maurice E. Googins Jr. and Suzanne (Holmes) Googins.

Gary was a contractor and truly enjoyed carpentry and building homes, a trade he learned from his father and passed on to his son Jason. As he developed his business, he found he was happiest building a home in the quiet, beautiful scenic landscapes of Downeast Maine. He took pride in the homes he built and had deep respect for the subcontractors who worked beside him. He relished the quiet times at the Googins family camp on Tunk Lake. He also took pleasure in the rugged coast of Maine, spending much of his free time during the summer on his boat in Frenchman Bay. He loved a good story and was an excellent storyteller.

Gary is survived by his life partner of 31 years, Denise Barbieri of Ellsworth; a son, Jason E. Googins of Lamoine; a sister, Lori J. Googins of Lamoine; an uncle, Blaine T. Holmes, and wife, Donna, of Ellsworth; nieces Arielle, Arianna, Jamie, Jodie and Jordan and husband, Mike; great-nieces Savannah and Isabella; great-nephew Maximilian; and a brother-in-law, Donald “Buddy” Wood. Gary was predeceased by his parents, Maurice and Suzanne Googins, and sister, Deborah Wood.

As an expression of your sympathy, tell someone a good story, make them laugh and put a smile on their face. A celebration of Gary’s life will take place later this year.
