ORLAND

Lucille Frances Lord Soper sailed away from this Earth on Feb. 7, 2020, to be with her beloved husband, Charlie. She was born Feb. 28, 1935, at home in Bucksport to her parents Daryl Carlton and Bertha Edna (Moore) Lord.

In 1955, she married the love of her life, Charles Ivyl Soper. In 1957, she graduated from UMF with a BS in home economics. She then followed Charlie to Ulm, Germany, for his last year in the Army. They returned to Maine and built their home and family together in Orland. For many years Lucille was a substitute teacher in Bucksport and Orland schools. She was a founding board member of the Bucksport Regional Health Center that had its humble beginnings in what was, and is now again, the Alamo Theatre. She loved to sew, knit, oil paint, teach and research family genealogy. She also enjoyed her time spent sailing Penobscot Bay from Bucksport to Deer Isle and the family camp on Pleasant River Lake. She spent many years caring and advocating for her husband in his journey through end-stage renal disease. Thanks to their son Foster, who donated a kidney in 1987, Charlie and Lucille enjoyed 28 extra years together. They celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary before Charlie’s passing in February 2015.

She is survived by her son Charles Wesley Soper and wife, Rose Rapp, and her daughter Cheryl D. (Soper) McGraw and husband, Bart I. McGraw; grandchildren Joshua W. Soper and wife, Golda Summers, Brooke M. Thomas and partner Jon Chase, Aryn M. McGraw and Tristan I. McGraw; two great-grandchildren, Audrey Bell Soper and Holden Charles Chase. She is also survived by her brother Linwood E. Lord; brothers-in-law Edwin H. Soper (Elizabeth), James F. Soper (Marion), David W. Soper (Susan) and sister-in-law Patricia M. (Soper) Downs (Bruce). She had many beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and her son Albert Foster Soper.

Lucille’s family would like to thank the multitude of family members, friends and community members who helped her over the years. It is greatly appreciated. We know it wasn’t always an easy thing to do. There will be a memorial gathering later this summer.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Bucksport Regional Health Center or the National Kidney Foundation. Arrangements were made by Kiley-Foley Funeral Home, Brewer.
