FRANKLIN
Louisa Angus Grosjean, 95, died Feb. 5, 2020, in Holden with family by her side. She was born July 11, 1924, in Tenafly, N.J., the oldest daughter of Bruce Walker Angus and Louisa Benedict Angus. She was raised in Tenafly and graduated from high school there. She graduated from Connecticut College in 1945.
Louisa married Ralph Grosjean on June 7, 1945, and they spent 59 years together until Ralph’s death in 2005. She lived most of her adult life in North Chatham, N.Y., her children were born there, and she considered that her home. In 2001, she and Ralph moved to Franklin to be near family. In 2012, she moved next door to live with her son Charlie’s family. The last six months of her life she spent in Holden in a private care home.
As a child in the 1930s, Louisa lived for weeks in the summers in a wall tent on a northern New Jersey lake with her mother, sister and assorted friends, while her father worked in the city. She canoed, sailed an old rowboat and never learned to like either one, but she loved swimming and the freedom of living in the woods. As an adult, Louisa was a teacher, first for special needs children on Staten Island, followed by 25 years of teaching kindergarten and first grade in Valatie, N.Y. She loved people. She was calm, understanding, gracious and comforting. She helped anywhere she saw a need. She was the rock of the family.
Louisa was predeceased by her husband, Ralph, in 2005, a son Stephen in 1986, a son Andrew in 1988, a daughter-in-law Lina in 2012 and her sisters-in-law Jeanne and Ellen. She is survived by her dear sister Mary Eleanor, a son Charles and his wife, Susanne, a daughter-in-law Christina, six grandchildren Jesse (Laurel), Carl (Brandi), Rebecca, Taino (Kaela), Emerson (Kassie) and Lisa, 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Living with dementia is hard, and Louisa had many people who helped keep her happy and cared for as she aged. In addition to her extended family they included, among others, her friends and neighbors in Hog Bay, Wendy Gignoux and Dr. McCall at the Gouldsboro Clinic, Jean and Connie, who stayed with her and took her to town, and Marlene, Dave, Charlene and Danielle at Total Care Solution.
There will be a family celebration in the summer. Louisa will be buried in the East Franklin Cemetery.
