EASTBROOK
Diane Allen Stewart died peacefully at Molasses Pond on Dec. 10, 2019, after a very long battle with metastatic breast cancer. She was born on Dec. 18, 1939, in Blue Hill, the daughter of Charles K. and Ruth A. (Cummings) Allen.
Diane attended Sedgwick schools, graduated from George Stevens Academy, Class of 1957 and Husson College Class of 1961. She went on to receive her Master’s in Education from the University of Maine at Orono. Diane taught for 38 years in a variety of secondary school positions and retired from Old Town High School in 1999. She taught business education at many Maine schools, Brooklin, Deer Isle- Stonington, Orono and Old Town High School and served on many educational committees. Diane maintained lifelong friendships with several co-workers and loved working with students. In 1996, she and her husband, Ken, renovated the “Stewart” family camp that was originally purchased by Ken’s parents, John and Mabel Stewart, in 1939. They loved the peace and serenity of Molasses Pond during their retirement years. Diane enjoyed watching the many species of wildlife that also called Molasses Pond home, tending to her flower gardens and was delighted to host years of family visits to “camp.” Diane was a devoted member of the Eastbrook Baptist Church and the former Greenwood Grange and was always happy to be a part of many community activities. Ken and Diane enjoyed annual trips for many years to Grand Manan Island in New Brunswick, Canada, and Tim Pond Camps, which is located in Eustis, Maine. Diane traveled extensively with friends and family to several European countries and around the United States. Although she loved all her travels, she had particularly fond memories of College Station, Texas, and France with good friends Karen and Linda.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Kenneth Stewart of Eastbrook; brother, Charles K. Allen Jr., who resides at Deer Isle Nursing Home; very special niece, Kathie Koontz of Sedgwick and niece, Susan Blanco of Washington state; nephew, Gary Allen of Sedgwick; stepchildren, Jeff Stewart of New York and Susan Tracy of Bangor; her beloved golden retriever Magie and cat, Mr. Grey Boy. She was predeceased by her parents; brother, Jon I. “Banker” Allen, and sister-in-law, Hope Allen.
Diane was able to spend her last weeks at home on Molasses Pond with the help of many wonderful neighbors and outstanding caregivers; Liz, Kathy and her stepdaughter and nurse, Susan. Many thanks to Dr. Starie Seay and the great staff at Ellsworth Family Practice along with Northern Light Home and Hospice. A special thanks to her primary hospice nurse, Katherine.
A service of remembrance will be held at the Eastbrook Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Jan. 12, 2020.
In lieu of flowers, we would suggest contributions be made in memory of Diane to the Eastbrook Baptist Church, c/o of church treasurer, Jon Pierce, 133 Fitchburg Road, Waltham, ME 04605. Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth.
