BAR HARBOR

Judy Hemmingsen, 71, of Bar Harbor passed away peacefully on Sept. 21, 2019, surrounded by her loving family.

Judy was born in Fort Fairfield and attended Presque Isle High School and then moved to Brewer and graduated from Brewer High School. Judy and her husband, Eddie, purchased the Bluenose Motel in Bar Harbor in 1980, starting their journey as prominent members of the Maine hospitality community. Judy was responsible for creating the Rose Garden restaurant in Bar Harbor, one of the only AAA 5 Diamond restaurants ever in the state of Maine. The Hemmingsens went on to create the Belfast Bay Inn in Belfast. They returned to Bar Harbor in 2017 to purchase and redesign first the Ullikana Cottage Inn, then the Bass Cottage Inn, two of the finest hospitality properties in the state. Judy was very pleased to learn in August of this year that she will be the 2020 recipient of the Hospitality Maine Lifetime Achievement Award. The award will be presented posthumously in the spring of 2020.

Judy is survived by her husband of 40 years, Ed Hemmingsen of Bar Harbor, son and daughter-in-law Jeffrey and Connie Merrithew and grandchildren Molly and Jack of Carl Junction, Mo., siblings Jill Parker of Holden and Steven and Melissa Parker of Mariaville.

A celebration of life gathering for family and friends will be held at the Bass Cottage Inn on Sunday, Oct. 27, from 2-4 p.m. The family is very grateful for the loving care provided by the following agencies. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Judy’s memory to Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County, 14 McKenzie Ave., Ellsworth, ME 04605 or Avalon Hospice, 2024 Maiden Lane, Joplin, MO 64804.
