Alan Gayle Smith, a professional builder and resident of Orland, died unexpectedly at home on June 26, 2019, at the age of 68.
Alan is survived by his family: his wife, Nikki Smith; his son, Shaw Smith; his sisters, Marge Jeffries and Linda Cook; as well as his numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law and their children. He is also survived by longtime friends David Weaver, Nick Banks, Gregg Pavilides, Dan Sickles, and Steve Coloprete. He was predeceased by his father, Gayle Smith, and his mother, Joyce Smith.
Alan was born in East Liverpool, Ohio, on Feb. 27, 1951, to Joyce and Gayle Smith. He was an accomplished athlete in both high school and college in the sports of football, wrestling and track. He graduated from The University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio, in 1973 with a degree in physical education. He worked briefly as a teacher but soon became a professional builder, which he excelled at until his death. On Aug. 22, 1981, he married his soulmate, Nikki. On May 29, 1986, he welcomed into this world his adored son, who was the most important part of his life.
Alan was a devoted father and husband. He enjoyed fishing, camping and hiking in the Rocky Mountains, gold-panning local creeks and rivers and was a bassist in a local band in his early years. He was a special man who was very fond of his family and pets. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family and all who knew him.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday, July 7, 2019 at the Luttrell Household at 42 Ebens Trail, Orland, ME 04472 from 2-4 pm. Any cards or flowers can be sent to Mitchell Tweedie Funeral Home in Bucksport. Any donations can be made to the American Humane Society in his memory.
