He grew up in Winter Harbor and graduated from Sumner Memorial High School in 1969. He was an outstanding athlete in all sports, but basketball was his favorite. He played for Jerry Kane’s basketball team all four years, and loved to reminisce about Sumner basketball. Steve went on to play basketball at the University of Maine at Orono, where he graduated with a degree in education in 1973. He earned his master’s degree from UMaine in 2001.

Steve married his high school sweetheart, Mary Lou Gordon, in 1972. Together they had two daughters, Miranda and Megan Lane. He began his teaching career at Sullivan Grammar School and moved to Mountain View School when it was built. He taught middle school for 41 years, coached various sports for 22 years and mentored several young teachers. He impacted the lives of many students and teachers, including his own daughters. He retired from teaching in 2015.

In his retirement, Steve enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, painting with Mike and running his small lawn mowing business. Throughout his adult life, Steve was devoted to his second family, the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Steve was known for his genuine enthusiasm and love of life. He was unselfish, kind, honest and always willing to lend a hand. He had a great sense of humor and adored his family and friends.

Steve is survived by his beloved wife of 46 1/2 years, Mary Lou (Gordon) Lane, his daughters Miranda and Mark Vallor, and Megan and Ben Rowell, his sister Diana and Tommy Young, his brothers Tom and Ruth Lane, and Roger and Lea Lane, his treasured grandchildren Noah and Makenna Vallor and Lucy and Emma Rowell, several nieces and nephews, mother-in-law Martha White, sister-in-law Marce and Frank Marcoux, and brother-in-law James and Chris Gordon. He was predeceased by his parents, Reyford and Blossom Lane, his father-in-law Cecil Gordon, and his special brother-in-law Greg Gordon.

There will be a memorial service at Sumner Memorial High School on March 23 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Steve’s name to Sumner Memorial High School, care of Lucille Null, 2456 U.S. 1, Sullivan, ME 04664.
