Margaret Rowe Ackerman Jordan

ELLSWORTH

Margaret Rowe Ackerman Jordan, 100, passed away peacefully on Jan. 19, 2019, after a short illness. She was born on Oct. 16, 1918, the only child of Susan Jordan Rowe and Leon Elmer Rowe. Most of her life was spent in Ellsworth. She graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1936 and attended Westbrook College.

In 1939, she married John F. Ackerman, who had come to Ellsworth to manage the J.J. Newberry store. Before WWII, John and Margaret ran a card shop, and in 1954 they established Ackerman Hardware on Main Street in Ellsworth. In 1964, the hardware store moved to the new Ellsworth Shopping Center. Margaret was involved in the family business and an active homemaker, raising four children and teaching them important lessons: treat others with respect, express gratitude, speak proper English and use good manners.

In 1984, some years after the death of her husband, John, Margaret married Ray M. Jordan, and spent a number of years living in Bangor.

Throughout her life, Margaret’s interest and love for her family were evident. She enjoyed visits and trips to see her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Family gatherings were joyful occasions with plentiful food and activity. For several years, she enjoyed the camaraderie of her “painting class” and her landscape oil paintings are treasured by family.

Margaret was predeceased by her parents, husband, John Ackerman, husband, Ray Jordan, stepson Richard Jordan, granddaughter Helen Ackerman and great-granddaughter Faith Zinke.

She is survived by her four children: Jeanette (“Jean”) Popikas and husband, Capt. Charles Popikas, USN (retired), Gulf Breeze, Fla., John Richard (“Dick”) Ackerman and wife, Linda, of Austin, Texas, Susan Bergeron and husband, Daniel, of Ossipee, N.H., Joel Ackerman, DMD, and wife, Carolyn, of Lamoine, stepdaughter Joan Jordan Grant and stepson Paul Jordan and their families.

She is survived by 10 grandchildren: C. Steven Popikas, Lynn Popikas Greene, Heidi Ackerman Guzik, D.Aud and husband, David, Kristine Ackerman Luck, Wendy Ackerman, J. Matthew True and wife, Trista, Robert True, Jeffrey Taylor and wife, Olivia, Kerry Ackerman Novello and husband, Kevin, Amy Ackerman Zinke and husband, Justin.

There are 12 great-grandchildren: Ashley Greene and fiancé Mark Finke, Caroline Greene, Jonathan and Jason Guzik, Ryan, Alexander and Elizabeth Luck, Autumn Taylor, Olivia and Alana Novello, Joy and Hope Zinke.

The family wishes to express deep appreciation to Marlene Walker of Total Care Solution for the kind care Margaret received for the last 18 months of her life. There will be no funeral service at the request of the deceased. The family will hold a private graveside service at a later date.
