BLUE HILL

Nathan Rapp, 57, died in a vehicle accident north of Ellsworth, July 25, 2019. He was born Feb. 17, 1962, in Choteau, Mont., to Gerald and Frances Rapp.

Nathan grew up near Fairfield, Mont., hunting, fishing and trapping every free moment he could. He learned to work hard and play incredibly well with others in a one-room school and in the loving arms of his immediate and extended family.

Nathan irrigated on his motorcycle and fought forest fires for the U.S. Forest Service on the Helena Hotshot crew. He traveled all over the West as their lead sawyer. Nathan met his then-firefighting wife-to-be, Heather Morrison, on fires in Idaho in 1988. They celebrated 28 years of loving marriage June 8.

Nathan’s pride and true joy was his family. He loved nothing more than supporting his daughter, son and wife in their ventures. He made homes out of houses, chicken palaces out of coops, gardens out of fields and friends out of neighbors and acquaintances. Nathan was a giver and a helper, always available to quietly do anything it took to make the world and people he came in contact with better. His spirit was and still is great and easy to see shining through his children and all who love him.

He is survived by his smitten wife, Heather, daughter, Kara Morrison, and son, Clark Morrison, of Blue Hill; his parents, Gerald and Frances Rapp, and brother, Mathias Rapp, of Fairfield, Mont., and his sister, Niomie McShane, of Missoula, Mont., and too many cousins, nieces and nephews to list, but not to be forgotten.

A potluck and fireworks celebration of Nathan’s life will be held Aug. 16 at 5:30 p.m. at his home, 280 Turkey Farm Road, Blue Hill (rain date p.r.n.). Gifts in Nathan’s memory can be sent to the Blue Hill Heritage Trust, P.O. Box 222, Blue Hill, ME 04614 or Down East Family YMCA, 238 State St., Ellsworth, ME 04605.

GOULDSBORO

Edward Heath Stanley went to meet his Savior on July 30, 2019. He was 87. He now joins his wife, Maxine Johnson Stanley, and his eldest son, Joseph Edward Stanley, in that bright Kingdom. He was born Aug. 17, 1931, to Lawrence Heath Stanley and Edith Potter Stanley. The midwife attending was Jenny Ober Stanley.

Known as “Ed” or “Dad” depending on the generation, he was loved by all who knew him and will be sadly missed.

In 1955, Ed and Maxine (Dad and Mom) traveled to Morgan Hill, Calif., in the back of a pickup truck with their three oldest of what would become nine children and their water spaniel, Rowser. Dad worked days and attended college at night, graduating from San Jose University as an industrial wireman. He then worked for such companies as Lockheed and IBM.

In 1958, Dad and Mom became co-founders of the Almaden Neighborhood Church, where Mom taught Sunday school and mentored the Campfire Girls, while Dad served as administrator and led the Christian Boys Club. But as the population and crime rose, they returned home to Maine.
Ed returned to the life he loved most: lobster fishing and clamming. He remained at his beloved farm until he was stricken with dementia.

Dad is survived by a sister, Joline Stanley, and a brother, Lawrence Stanley, both of East Sullivan. He is also survived by his daughter, Barbara Provot, seven sons, Louis, Victor, Ronald, Travisse, Darryl, Matthew and Kent, and an ever increasing number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dad and Mom were a blessing from God who shared their blessings with all of those who knew and loved them. Our prayers now can only be to one day be united with them in Heaven.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, Aug. 18, at the Knights of Pythias Hall, Route 1, Gouldsboro, at 1 p.m.

BLUE HILL

Virginia Merrill Dewing, 87, peacefully passed away Aug. 3 in Blue Hill. She was born in Marblehead, Mass., Aug. 2, 1932, the daughter of Wilbur Mudge and Myrtle Gertrude (Hazel) Merrill.

She spent her childhood on Cape Cod, with her toes in the sand, reaping the benefits of the small-town life in the winter and the cosmopolitan atmosphere of sophistication in the summer. She married Lt. Donald R. Dewing in 1953 in Houston, Texas, and traveled extensively as a USAF family. The best years were the four years that the family spent in France. She attended the University of Massachusetts for three years then took a 20-year break while raising her family. Ginger re-entered the academic world at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in 1970, where she completed her BA in History and continued at UNLV in the history master’s program. In retirement, the Dewings moved to Franklin, where Ginger ran an antique shop for 20 years. In 1987, they moved to Blue Hill. Ginger played with Flash in the Pans for 10 years and became their first captain. Ginger’s husband was the president of PAC and after his death and in his honor, she put her efforts to creating the Dewing wing at PAC headquarters, which allowed the staff to be present 24/7. She also volunteered for Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, First Congregational Church of Blue Hill and the Bagaduce Music Lending Library. Ginger worked for many years with the American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. In 2000, she was presented with the “National Volunteer of the Year Award” at the Komen Foundation Gala in Dallas, Texas. Her fundraising activities ended with a spectacular auction for the National Foundation of Transplants, which had helped her son-in-law, who was the recipient of a liver transplant. Her first love was bridge. She was an American Contract Bridge League certified teacher and director. Her drive and enthusiasm for the game was contagious and resulted in bridge clubs being formed in Deer Isle, Northeast Harbor and Blue Hill. She traveled extensively with her bridge partners to regional and national tournaments where she achieved the national ranking of Ruby Life Master.

She is survived by daughter, Marilyn Smith and husband, Thomas; daughter Dawn Dewing and husband, Brent Hamor; daughter-in-law, Priscilla Dewing; grandchildren, Erika Machtinger, Nicholas Dewing, Ginger Harrington, Samantha Dewing, Mallory Dalton, Jordan Zwerdling; great-grandchildren, Cameron, Richard, Jacob, Claira; sister, Marilyn Stewart and her niece, Susan Brunsvold. She was predeceased by her husband in 1995 and her son, Neal Dewing, in 2019. A celebration of life will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 25, 2019, at First Congregational Church, 22 Tenney Hill, Blue Hill.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ginger’s memory may be made to your local SPCA or the Bagaduce Music Lending Library, 49 South St., Blue Hill, ME 04614.

ELLSWORTH

Nancy R. Davis, 78, went to be with the Lord on Aug. 4, 2019. She was born in Ellsworth on Sept. 26, 1940.

Nancy was a devoted Baptist who loved her church family. She worked with the children through vacation Bible school and Awana for many years. Her mission while she was here on Earth was to encourage all her family and friends to know and love the Lord like she did. Her heart was so big, she loved and cared for so many. She enjoyed crafting and knitting, creating gifts for loved ones. She was always a hard worker, waitressing for 20 years. Throughout her life, she always made sure her family was well taken care of. Groceries, school clothes, babysitting grandchildren, she was always happy to help. She spent many years taking care of her parents in their end years as well.

We are all so grateful, as was she, for the beautiful friendships that developed at Leonard Lake Senior Housing, where she lived for the last years of her life.

She was predeceased by her parents, Wendell and Rosemary Reed, her brother Galen Reed, her son-in-law William Munson and two special nephews, Wilfred Watson and Gary Ripley.

She is survived by her seven children; Wendell Reed and wife, Belinda, of Southwest Harbor, Lorraine Munson of California, Linda Davis of Bangor, Raymond Davis Jr. and wife, Yvonne, of Ellsworth, Ann Tardiff and husband, Joseph, of Levant, Mary Stubbs and husband, Eddie, of Jonesboro, Christy Beal and husband, Rich, of Columbia. Also, 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren who were all the love of her life.

The memorial service will be held at Maine Coast Baptist Church in Ellsworth at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10. Refreshments will be served after. All are welcome to attend.

Gail Lynn Clausen

ELLSWORTH

On Aug. 7, 1947, Gail was born in Bayonne, N.J., a fact she was proud of all her life. She was the second daughter of Elsie and Charles Oliver. After graduating from Bayonne High School, she attended Jersey City State College, St. Peter’s Prep College and Christ Hospital School of Nursing. Before teaching, she got married and gave birth to two beautiful and intelligent daughters. The family moved to Pittstown, N.J., rightly nicknamed the Garden State.

Gail married Bill Clawson, a fellow educator. A few years later, they learned Bill had ALS, a debilitating and usually terminal disease. Gail’s nursing skills came into play as his health declined and on his birthday he passed away.

After devoting herself to Bill, raising two children, caring for parents, completing her education and surviving personal losses, she moved to Naples, Fla., where cousin Donna resided with her husband, Rick. There she took advantage of her subtropical surroundings and effected a personal transformation. The Jersey girl became a SCUBA diver, boated, fished and adapted to the clear waters of the Gulf and Keys. She taught science at Immokalee High School in a migrant community near the Everglades.

Students assumed Gail Clawson to be the wife of Bill Clausen, their middle school teacher. Slightly intrigued, Gail took advantage of a meeting at his school to introduce herself to him. Unconsciously, she expected someone resembling her previous button-down Bill. She was not spellbound. He struck her as “swarthy.” Later, Gail transferred to a Naples, Fla., middle school. A year later, I, none the wiser, also transferred to the same school where a professional relationship evolved into much more.

We were married Dec. 23, 2000. After a honeymoon in New Orleans, we returned to teaching and to our condo on the Gulf. Also in 2000, Gail and I bought a house in Downeast Maine, to which we would flee from Florida summers.

Next, we moved to Ocala, Fla., and then to New Jersey, where Gail taught science and I nannied our baby granddaughter, Maya. Fatherhood had previously been missing from my life, but I embraced my new role, and Maya made the job easy, even a joy! Then, we bought a home in Willis, Texas, north of Houston, where pregnant daughter Jeanine lived. Yeah, Texas. Meanwhile, Chrissie sold her Jersey home and was enticed to live in an RV with Gail, baby Maya, two dogs, a cat and myself in Jacksonville, Fla. It was fun!

Christina then got a job in Dallas, we sold our Willis home and moved to Dallas and later Jeanine also moved to there. Gail couldn’t be happier to be near her beloved daughters and Maya. All the while, we trekked to Maine every summer to work on our retirement home where family and friends visited. Summer 2018 saw us again in Maine. Gail flew to Seattle to join Jeanine for her 50th birthday celebration on an Alaskan cruise. They had a great time but by the end of the cruise, Gail returned to Dallas with Jeanine. She knew something was wrong. Tests and scans in early July gave the awful diagnosis: ovarian cancer, well advanced.

With characteristic optimism, Gail faced chemo, massive surgery and more chemo. But, the cancer prevailed. Ever the fighter, Gail continued to cook, encouraged her family, finished an ovarian cancer 5K walk and did her best to show nothing but love, strength and a positive attitude.

Seeking a second opinion and admission to a trial study, Gail, Jeanine, Chrissie and I drove to M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston and learned her situation was much worse than thought: Gail had not months left, but days. In her mother’s last visit with her oncologist, tearful Jeanine asked, “How did we get here?” Ever the wit, Gail responded, “Presumable, the tollway.” That’s my girl.

In the care of hospice, Gail was surrounded at home by family when she peacefully passed away April 25. She is survived by daughters Jeanine Lagoda, Christina Lagoda, Christina’s daughter Maya and husband, Bill.

An ardent advocate of Christ’s teachings regarding our “neighbors,” and a staunch supporter of nonviolence and equality, Gail did not wish a memorial service. We promised instead two life celebrations: one in Texas and another in Maine. Her family and friends in New Jersey, Florida, Maine and Texas will miss her enthusiasm and love, to say nothing of her culinary skills! Instead of flowers, donations may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center, P.O. Box 548, Montgomery, AL 36177-9621 and ovarian cancer research.

B. Joanne Dority, 88, passed away at home on Aug. 1. She was born April 5, 1931, in Bangor, the daughter of Everett and Marjorie (Morris) Pollard.

Joanne was an employee of Hancock County for 27 years and registrar of deeds for 18 of those years, a job she thoroughly enjoyed.

She was an avid Granger. As a member of the Mariaville Grange No. 441 for 73 years, she held many of the offices during her lifetime. She was also a member of Green Mountain Pomona No. 26 and the Maine State Grange and held many offices there as well.

Joanne was a member of the Union Congregational Church of Ellsworth Falls and served as deaconess. She was a charter member of the Tri-Town Garden Club and loved participating in all of its activities.

In her younger years, she enjoyed quilting, square dancing, snowmobiling, traveling, and was an excellent deer hunter. Joanne grew up on Beech Hill Pond in Otis and had many great memories and stories to tell of her childhood at the lake. She spent many summer weekends at her camp lot with her husband, Arthur, and children, barbecuing, swimming and just having lots of fun. Some of her favorite pastimes were playing Scrabble, cribbage and reading westerns. Later grandchildren and great-grandchildren got to enjoy the same fun times with her. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. We will all greatly miss her.

Joanne was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Arthur Dority, and brother, Morris Pollard. She is survived by four children: Stephen Dority and wife, Linda; Sheldon Dority and companion, Lee McWilliams; Yvonne Saunders and husband, Rod; and Scott Dority and wife, Linda; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and brothers — John (Rick) Pollard, Bruce Pollard and Percy (Bud) Pollard.

FRANKLIN

Barbara Evelyn Dwyer Herget, born June 4, 1933, to Dorothea Nickerson and William Dwyer in Houlton, passed away suddenly Aug. 9, 2019. Her stepfather James Baker was an important part of her early life, as was her grandmother, who taught her how to sew and became the role model for her future relationships with her own granddaughters.

She graduated Ellsworth High School Class of 1951. As a single mother of two, she pursued and received a master’s degree while teaching at the Maine Youth Center. Barbara took refuge in summers at her Frye Island cottage for many years. She was selective about issuing invitations and even more selective about whom she invited back.

In recent years, she used her exceptional teaching skill to share her love of quilting. Those early sewing lessons with her grandmother set the foundation of an artist. She loved her quilting groups deeply and resented the progression of her health that made her gradually step back from them.

Barbara took great joy in her family, particularly her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an adopted grandmother and called “Gram” by many, and she reveled in it. She is very much loved and missed.

Barbara is survived by son Mark Beede; daughter, Lynn (Beede) Nye; grandchildren, Anne Beede, Shawna King, Melissa (King) Burkart, Victoria (Nye) Clifford, Chloe (Nye) Johnson, Scott Nye and Robert Nye; great-grandchildren, Patrick and Imogen Busan, Sophia Burkart, Caroline Clifford and Jasmine Johnson.

A celebration of life will be held at the Ellsworth Community of Christ, 283 State St., Monday, Aug. 19, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hancock County Quilters for their Comfort Quilts project. Checks can be written payable to Hancock County Quilters and mailed to 14 Viking Trail Lane, Surry, ME 04684.

CHERRYFIELD

Beryl A. Reynolds passed away July 16, 2019, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. She was born Nov. 16, 1937, daughter of Maurice and Millie (Dorr) Burgess in Harrington.

Beryl was an avid Red Sox fan — she never missed a game. Pedroia was “her man.” She worked all her life in various factories in Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut and back to Maine, where she retired from Elscott Corp. She enjoyed playing bingo, reading, knitting, going to the slots and playing bunco with a special group of friends at Narraguagus Estates, where she lived for the last eight years. She also crocheted the most beautiful doilies. She will be sadly missed by all her friends, especially her best friend, Christine Presley, whom when we couldn’t get a hold of Mom, she was with Christine going to yard sales, shopping, out to eat, bingo and just for a ride.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Alfred E. Reynolds of Milbridge; a sister, Joan Smith, of Addison; four children, all of Milbridge, daughter Karyn Reynolds and fiancé Brendan McTeague, sons Ronnie Reynolds and Mark Reynolds and daughter Annette Reynolds; three grandchildren, Sean Reynolds and wife, Meaghan, of Bucksport, Siobhan Chang of Hancock and Nathan Reynolds and fiancée Cecilia of Biddeford; two beautiful great-granddaughters, Karly and Isabella Chang; a special niece, Patsy Petzald of Harrington, who also had Mom out shopping, eating and going to the slots, visiting family in Massachusetts; she truly enjoyed those trips; plus several cousins, nieces and nephew and their families who are too numerous to count. She was predeceased by her parents and four sisters, Jenny, Norma, Betty and Marylou.

Arrangements are under the direction and care of Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Milbridge.
