Ellsworth

Stuart C. Taylor Sr. passed on June 26, 2019, surrounded by his family. He was born in his grandfather’s house in Machiasport on Dec. 29, 1931, to Rudolph and Winnie Taylor. He attended schools in Machiasport, Old Town, Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Waterville and Machias, where he graduated high school in 1949.

After graduating from Machias High School in 1949, he joined the U.S. Navy and upon completion of basic training he volunteered for submarine duty and was assigned to the U.S.S. Clamagore, which was a large diesel sub. After proudly serving his country, he was discharged in 1953, and returned home to Washington County. Shortly thereafter in 1953, he enrolled at Springfield College in Massachusetts and later graduated in 1957.

He met Rosalie Dale Hooper, the love of his life, in late June of 1956, and they married soon after on Sept. 14, 1956, and began a lifetime of love together. They were a great team, raising six children.

He taught and coached for two years in Jonesport and taught one year in Machias before accepting the physical education teaching position and basketball and baseball coaching spots at Ellsworth High School in 1960. After playing and coaching basketball in all the tiny gyms in Washington County, Ellsworth was, in his words, “The Big Time.” He often told a story of walking into the gymnasium at Ellsworth High School for the first time, which was for him like walking into the Boston Garden. He coached basketball for 10 seasons with great success, winning two Eastern Maine championships and two state titles in 1964 and 1966. He had true passion for coaching and took a sincere interest in the lives of his players. They all say that he was tough, but always fair.

In 1968, he began attending classes at the University of Maine and eventually attained his master’s degree in education. In 1970, he decided that it was time to leave Ellsworth High School and he accepted the role of dean of students at Husson College, where he was also the mens’ swim coach. He enjoyed his time there but wanted to return to Ellsworth to continue his career. In 1972, he returned to the Ellsworth Junior/Senior High School as the assistant principal and athletic director. He eventually became the principal at EHS and retired after the 1986/1987 school year.
In his education career, he impacted thousands of lives of young people, helping to guide them through the perils of teenage years and young adulthood. He always gave great advice, which may not have always been what they wanted to hear, but it was always exactly what they needed to hear. He believed in treating everyone fairly, and genuinely had the best interests of his students in his heart.

After retiring from the school system, he worked at Blink Bonnie Golf Course in Sorrento for 21 seasons
as the greens keeper, 15 with his wife, Rosalie. 2008 was their last season. They loved working there together and again were a great team. Stuart would joke after hiring Rosalie that he “used to be the boss until he hired her.”

“Stu” had another true passion and that was fishing. Brook trout fishing was his favorite. In his final days, he said this about fishing: “If you go fishing to catch big trout, then you enjoy fishing only once in a while. A 15-inch brook trout is fun to catch, but I enjoy catching a 6-inch brook trout as much as I enjoy catching the big ones. Therefore, I enjoy fishing all the time.” Fishing with him was always fun. Every time he would get one on he would holler and hoot like it was the first fish he had ever caught and that enthusiasm for fishing transferred to each of his children and grandchildren.

Some of his favorite spots were Crooked River, Scotts Brook, Rawlford Brook, Mopang, The Clear Pool, Humpback brook, Burnt Camp Hill, Youngs Pond, No Name Pond, Peep Pond, the Narraguagus River and many, many more. He was preceded in death by two great fishing buddies, Joe “Bud” McCarthy and Harold “Tug” White.

As a dad, he gave his children the best experiences they could have ever hoped for. He set great examples, was a role model for the ages, taught them great lessons and made them understand that we are each responsible for our own success and failures in life. He was tough, but always fair. When parting, he always hugged and said, “I love you,” every time, no exceptions. He was a true family man who always put his family first.

Stuart was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Meme and Pepe Taylor; maternal grandfather, Dan J. Stewart; father, Rudolph “Curly” Taylor; his mother, Winnie Taylor and a son, Scott Taylor.

He is survived by his beautiful wife of nearly 63 years, Rosalie D. Taylor; sister Bonny of Ellsworth; son Stuart Jr. of Biddeford; son Gary and his wife, Kelley, of Ellsworth; daughter Lisa and partner Craig and his children, Dustin and Lindsey of Trenton; son Larry and wife Victoria of Ellsworth; son Darren and wife Camille of Otis; grandson Jacob Taylor and wife Courtney; granddaughters Erika Palmer and husband Tyler, Lauren Taylor, Courtney Jolin, Chelsey Taylor, Lindsey Taylor; step-grandchildren Stephen Grant and significant other Ashley, Michael Grant and wife Brooke, Schylar Jewell and significant other Darren Zajdel and Jaret Jewell. Great-grandchildren Marquis Jolin, Cole Stillwell, Lucas Taylor, Trey Taylor, Landon Tucker, Ryland Simpkin, Tristan and Liam Zajdel. Nephews Harold Alley Jr. of Beals, Dan Alley of Belgrade and niece Jennifer Phinney of Machias.

The funeral service will be held July 20 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church on High Street in Ellsworth, immediately followed by a Celebration of Life in the Stuart C. Taylor Gymnasium at the Ellsworth Middle School beginning at 12:30.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Scott C. Taylor Memorial Scholarship fund, Camden National Bank, P.O. Box 807, Ellsworth, ME, 04605. Make checks payable to Camden National Bank. Please put Scott C. Taylor Scholarship Fund in the memo section of checks.

Orono and Hancock

Kenneth Stuart Templeton Jr. died on Feb. 3, 2019, in Durham, N.C. He had moved thereto be closer to family after the death of his wife, Lois Main Templeton, three months prior. He was born to Elizabeth Proudfit Templeton and Kenneth Stuart Templeton in Evanston, Ill., on July 23, 1923. He was raised in Lake Forest, Ill., and spent two years atWilliams College until World War II interrupted his studies. He volunteered to join the 10th Mountain Division and trained at Camp Hale in the Colorado Rockies before being shipped to the front in Italy. He served as a 2nd lieutenant and was injured in the line of duty toward the end of the war. The year after his return he married Lois Dickinson Main in 1947.

Ken finished his degree in history at Williams College, then taught high school briefly before moving to California to begin his career with institutions that support the work of libertarian scholars. A self-described “lifelong libertarian and implacable enemy of authoritarianism,” he liked to impress the friends of his teenage children by proclaiming himself an anarchist. In actuality, he was a traditional man who revered order and common sense, even while occasionally pushing those limits. Ken and Lois lived in Northern California and Indianapolis for most of their lives, with the majority of summers spent on Hancock Point. He loved to take the family on ski trips in California and Colorado, often including relatives and friends. His sense of fun always came out on those trips. In his later years he developed a fascination, some might call it an obsession, with John Wayne, and became known as “Duke,” starting with his grandchildren and then by practically everyone. He continued to enjoy playing pranks and teasing any and all who would put up with him. We always reassured those who were new to this that it was a sign of affection. In 2011, Ken and Lois moved to Orono and lived the last seven years of their lives at Dirigo Pines, where he enjoyed life in spite of increased challenges. Nothing stood in the way of a martini every evening and a bowl of ice cream before bed. He and Lois leave behind three children, Kenneth (wife, Nancy), John (wife, Emily), and Elizabeth, as well as seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Ken and Lois loved the natural land and donations may be made, if desired, to Frenchman’s Bay Conservancy. The family will gather in Madison in October to inter his ashes and raise a toast during cocktail hour.

Orono and Hancock

Lois Main Templeton died on Nov. 7, 2018, with her family by her side. She was born to Dorothy Turner Main and John Smith Main on Jan. 16, 1928, in Madison, Wis. When she was 12 her father died, a loss that threaded through the rest of her life, not that you would know it unless you knew her well. Following a childhood in Wisconsin, she married Kenneth Stuart Templeton Jr. in 1947. As a family they lived for extended periods of time in Connecticut, California and Indianapolis, while returning repeatedly to spend summers on Hancock Point. Lois developed a love of abstract oil
painting, which enriched her life and the lives of others, both as a painter and a teacher. She relished bringing together people of disparate backgrounds and watching them form new bonds of friendship.

After graduating from Indiana University and Purdue University’s Herron School of Art and Design she taught there for several years while also working out of her own studio indowntown Indianapolis. Her paintings have hung in galleries and museums across the country and in 2011 she received the NUVO Cultural Lifetime Achievement Award. She wrote many poems, which informed much of her painting, and authored two books, “The Studio Book” and “Who Makes the Sun Rise.” In the spring and summer of 2018, the Indiana State Museum of Art featured a retrospective exhibition of her work. The Herron School of Art and Design has established a scholarship in her honor.

In 2011, Lois and Ken moved to Dirigo Pines in Orono, where she continued her work as a painter and a writer until the time of her death. Cancer took her with quick mercy. Until the last few months she was full of zest and “vigah,” as she liked to call it, remaining full of enthusiasm, curiosity and humor. She loved her family, music, her wide circle of friends, books, a story read aloud by firelight and the old cottage on Hancock Point where her heart was most at home. She leaves behind three children, Kenneth (and his wife,Nancy), John (wife, Emily) and Elizabeth, as well as seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. The Indianapolis art community held a memorial service in her honor in January and the family will gather in Madison next fall to inter her ashes and tell the stories she loved. We miss you, Mom.

“When will we burn the Great log?
The one over there there, unsplit, bearing the seasons.
Others burn down to marshmallow embers;
But the great log takes two men
To heave it into the flying sparks
And to tell the long story into the night.”

Franklin

Ronald Emerson Thomas, 73, beloved husband, father, brother and community member, passed unexpectedly on July 1, 2019. He was born July 5, 1945, in Guilford, to Charles Thomas and Gladys (Emerson) Thomas.

Ron spent his childhood on the family farm in Dover-Foxcroft, where he honed his skills in all manners of farm life. He and his siblings dutifully performed their chores while also managing to partake in many childhood antics. His mother, Gladys, most certainly had her hands full keeping an eye on six rambunctious boys. In his teenage years, Ron had a paper route, cut wood with his father and brothers, worked for a furniture store and attended Foxcroft Academy, where he graduated in 1964. After graduation, like so many young men from Maine, Ron set his sights on Connecticut, where there were many job opportunities. He and his first wife, Ellen, packed a Volkswagen Beetle and headed south, where Ron would land an apprenticeship that eventually shaped the rest of his life. Ron often shared the story of his walking into a machine shop for the first time, where he first saw a working metal lathe that captured his fascination immediately. His aptitude for math, combined with his desire to learn and strong work ethic, resulted in his moving up quickly in the machine tool trade. Being a true “Mainer,” Ron couldn’t resist the call to return to his home state, ready to take on the machine tool world by storm. After working for various companies, and absorbing machine tool knowledge like a sponge, Ron went out on his own and opened his own machine shop, R.E. Thomas Machine Co., in 1973 in Bangor. He successfully built a business through long hours doing custom design and contract work for large corporations. In 1985, Ron relocated the business to Hancock, where he continued custom and corporate work until 2001, when an unexpected opportunity literally walked in the door when a potential customer arrived with underwater marine hardware that he wanted manufactured. Soon after Ron began manufacturing this product, the customer decided he was unable to take it further and offered the sale of his line to Ron. At this point, Ron and Karen raised the money to buy the product line as Ron immediately saw the potential to make vast improvements. It was a perfect marriage; boats, underwater marine hardware and fishermen. These are all the things Ron truly related to and he dedicated his efforts into designing safe and modernized products as part of R. E. Thomas Marine Hardware. His expertise and preciseness was matched only by his ability to make all customers feel as though they were his only customer. Ron’s shop had an open-door atmosphere where all were welcome, not only to do business, but to also chat and have a cup of coffee.

Ron had a big, warm smile, super friendly demeanor and absolutely loved to help people. If he didn’t know you, he damn well got to know you, one way or another. Ron was very proud of overcoming alcoholism with the support of AA, and its many members, who came to be like family to him. Ron’s most treasured pastime was fishing. He was always searching for “Timmy Toque,” as Karen called them, while they trolled along on so many of Maine’s gorgeous lakes, their dog Grady by their side. Ron served on boards for both Open Door Recovery and the Franklin Historical Society.

Ron is survived by his wife and soul mate in this life, Karen Macomber. Also surviving him are his two cherished daughters, Heidi Thomas and Ami Simbari; as well as son-in-law Ron Simbari; and stepdaughters, Leslee Differ and husband, Danny, and Joslyn Brenton and husband, Peter. Ron’s grandchildren include Gabriella and Isabel Simbari, Connor Dorr, Jack and Miles Differ, Quinn Kelly, and Clara Brenton. He is also survived by his siblings, Stuart Thomas, David Thomas and his wife, Joanne, James Thomas and his husband, Bob, Cathie Goodine and her husband, Greg, Cindi Lee and Vickie Parsons, along with brother-in-law, Mark Macomber. Ron was predeceased by his parents, as well as two brothers, Paul and Gerald Thomas, and his brother-in-law Danny Parsons. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Ron’s life will be held on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2019, at the Franklin Veterans Club, 4 Cards Crossing in Franklin, from 2-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ron’s memory to the Franklin Historical Society’s School House Restoration Project at P.O. Box 317, Franklin, ME 04634. Ron’s passion for old buildings, along with his many vocational skills, enabled this project to get off the ground. His vision will continue to support the ongoing restoration.

STEUBEN and MILO

Herbert Huckins Jr., 82, went to be with the Lord on July 13, 2019, after a brief illness at a Milo health care facility. Born in Milbridge on Dec. 11, 1936, “Huck” was the son of Herbert Huckins and Carolyn (Strout). He was a 1955 graduate of Milbridge High School and a 1961 graduate of Washington State Teachers College (now the University of Maine at Machias). A basketball star in both high school and college, he later went on to become a referee for both basketball and soccer and spent many hours on the road traveling and officiating games with his fellow referee and good friend, Steve Kinghorn. Huck taught fifth grade at Grand Lake Stream. After teaching for several years, he decided it was time for a change and he became a lobsterman, a decision he never regretted and a career that would span 40-plus years until his retirement in 2015. He was a man who loved the water. Even though his profession was that of a commercial fisherman, he spent many weekends with his friend Wayne on a lake or stream fishing. There was an ongoing race between the two of them to see who could catch the most fish and be crowned king. Whether he won or lost, he would call his daughter and let her know if she was still a princess or if he had lost his crown. He even went on vacation, traveling to Alaska on two separate occasions, to visit his friend Stuart and go fishing. The day he caught his 253-pound halibut was a day worth remembering and he had the good sense to pose for a photo. He also loved animals — both his and those belonging to his friends. One little dog named Tasha stole his heart and he spoke of her often. He even named his lobster boat “Ole Grizz” after a beloved pet — an Old English sheepdog named Grizzy. Huck also loved hunting, especially bird hunting, and traveled to Bridgewater in Aroostook County every October for many years to go goose hunting.

In addition to his parents, Huck was predeceased in 2008 by his wife, Loretta, known to all who knew her as Pep; in 2017 by his stepdaughter Anne Canarr-Jones; in 2017 by his nephew Leroy Harrington Jr.; and by his siblings Juanita Harrington, Lillian Leighton, Guy Huckins and Joe Huckins. He is survived by his daughter Diana Huckins Bartlett of Milo; his stepdaughter Jane Brown of Ellsworth; his grandchildren Ragan Reardon, Rick Canarr, Ronald Canarr, Randall Canarr and Melanie Brown; several great-grandchildren; and countless friends and extended family.

It was Huck’s request that no services be held. Following cremation, interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Milbridge. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Ark Animal Shelter, 60 Barber Lane, P.O. Box 276, Cherryfield, ME 04622. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home. Condolences and memories may be expressed at www.laryfuneralhome.com.
