GOULDSBORO

Charles Douglas St. Claire

May 18, 1955 – October 20, 2018

Charles St. Claire of Gouldsboro was called home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Oct. 20. He was surrounded by cherished family and loved ones.

Charles, or “Charlie,” as most people called him, was born in New York and later relocated to Gouldsboro with his family, where he spent the rest of his life and met his loving wife, Doreen, of 30 years. No stranger to hard work, he spent his younger years working on a sailboat where he traveled with his beloved brother Tom on adventures throughout the Atlantic. They worked construction together and he spent his summers as a foreman on the blueberry fields. His love of boats led him to the Hinckley Co., where he worked for nearly 15 years as a marine electrician. He made many lasting friendships with his co-workers and was always excited to share his love of Christ with them. Charlie loved the Lord with all his heart and connected with countless people through that love.

Charlie enjoyed the outdoors and loved working in the woods on the land where he built his family’s home. He could almost always be found outside tinkering with one of his many projects. He loved swimming, gardening, sitting by the campfire in the evenings and inventing new ways to make life easier. He had a love of food and animals and was always ready with some kind of cheesy joke. His sense of humor was a goofy one that kept everyone around him with a smile on their face.

While he loved so many things in life, the thing he loved most was his family. He cherished each and every moment spent with his children, grandchildren nieces and nephews. He was a bigger kid at heart than all of them and made sure they knew just how loved they were any chance he could.

Charles is survived by his wife, Doreen St. Claire, of Gouldsboro, his son Justin St. Claire and wife, Lindsey St. Claire, and their two children Jonah and Lily, his daughter Katelyn St. Claire and her two children Dewey and Aviana, his two sisters Susan Lacrosse and husband, John Lacrosse, and Laurie Ehrlich and husband, Marvin Ehrlich, and brother Thomas St. Claire and wife, Sharon St. Claire, and many special nieces, nephews, and beloved friends. He will be greatly missed and forever loved by all he knew.

A funeral service and celebration of life will be held in honor of Charlie on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018, from 1-4 p.m. at the Gouldsboro Rec Center on the Pond Road. All family, friends and anyone who may have known him are encouraged to come and help in celebrating his life. God bless.

HALLOWELL AND SWAN’S ISLAND

Ralph Vahan Hagopian died on Oct. 14, 2018, surrounded by family. The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the hospice nurses who ensured his comfort to the end.

Ralph was born March 20, 1930, in New York City, but developed a lifelong love of the outdoors during family vacations to Connecticut. He graduated from Harvard University in 1951 with a degree in anthropology, and married Liedeke de Haan in 1953 while earning a Doctor of Divinity from Yale University. In 1973, Ralph earned a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Pittsburgh.

Friends and family will remember him as an avid boater, never happier than when sailing the waters near his beloved Swan’s Island. He cherished the island community; the family cabin, built with his wife in 1964, was where he truly felt at home.

Ralph was a talented woodworker and watercolor artist. He shared a love of bird watching with his wife and children.

He embraced lifelong learning, mastering new computer skills and keeping up with current events throughout his life. He knowledgably and happily discussed topics from the theology of Paul Tillich to tractor repair. No one was a bigger fan of Ogden Nash’s poetry.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Liedeke de Haan Hagopian. He is also survived by three daughters, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Anne Hagopian Van Buren.

A memorial service will be held in July 2019 on Swan’s Island.

BATH

Mr. Dwight W. Gates, 79, of Boothbay Harbor, formerly of Danvers, Mass., beloved husband of Sandra L. (Storm) Gates, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2018, surrounded by his family, following a brief illness.

Born in Danvers, he was the son of the late Carl P. Sr. and Alice (Burgess) Gates. He was raised and educated in Danvers, and was a graduate of the former Holten High School and president of the Class of 1957. He met the love of his life Sandra, and they were high school sweethearts and soulmates. He continued his education at Northeastern University studying engineering, and volunteered to serve his country as a member of the United States Coast Guard Reserves.

Mr. Gates had been employed with G.T.E Sylvania in Danvers for 28 years until the time of his retirement. He had an entrepreneurial spirit. In 1955, his father, Carl P. Gates Sr., purchased land on Heart Pond in East Orland. When he passed away in 1964, Dwight started his dream of creating a campground there. In 1977, the campground across Route 1 went up for sale. Dwight and Sandy purchased that and became the new owners of Whispering Pines Campground.

Aside from his family, there is nothing Dwight loved more than the campground, which they owned for 38 years. For the first 10 years Dwight would commute back and forth from Danvers to the campground every weekend while he continued to work at Sylvania in Danvers. His in-laws, Henry and Louise Storm, helped run the campground during the week while he was gone, which helped immensely. Upon his retirement from Sylvania in 1987, he was finally able to fulfill his dream of running the campground full time. In addition to the day-to-day operations, he also managed to create an atmosphere where people felt safe and like family. He even managed to save a life! The campground was never “work” to Dwight; it was his passion. The people, the land, the fun, the atmosphere was what made Whispering Pines Campground so terrific and Dwight was the architect.

Dwight was a member of the Maple Street Congregational Church in Danvers and the Quarter Century Club at Sylvania. He was also an official loon counter on Toddy Pond for the Maine Audubon Society for over 25 years. He was a town meeting member for Precinct 2 in Danvers for many years. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be deeply missed.

In addition to his loving wife of 58 years, Dwight is survived by his son, Barry D. Gates and his wife, Meredith, of Beverly, Mass., his daughter, Betsy L. Angelico of Boothbay, and his grandsons, Patrick Gates and Anthony Angelico, his brother, Sydney Gates of Melrose, Mass., his sisters-in-law, Carlene Storm of Danvers and Norma Gates of Peabody, Mass., and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Carl P. Gates Jr. and brother-in-law of the late John Storm, both of Danvers.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral service which will be held in the Peterson-O’Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St., (Rte. 62) Danvers, Saturday, Oct. 27, at 2:30 p.m. Burial is private. Visiting hours prior to the service from 1 to 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Dwight’s memory to Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601 or to the Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust, P.O. Box 266, Orland, ME 04472.
