ELLSWORTH

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It is with sad hearts that we had to say good bye to our good friend Jasper J. Johnson on Aug. 1, 2018, after a brief illness. Jasper was born Sept. 26, 1944, to Helen Graham and Jasper Johnson in East Machias.

Throughout his life Jasper played a big role within the Downeast Horizons family. He always wanted to fly and was granted his wish back in the ’90s when he took flight in a scenic plane over Bar Harbor. He loved to fish, and looked forward to spring and summer to be able to go with whomever would take him. He was a big fan of coffee, root beer and Burger King. Jasper loved cowboy shows and Johnny Cash. He also loved spending time visiting with his friends, especially one in particular, his dearest friend, Pamela Lawson.

Jasper leaves behind two sisters, Elsie Stauffer from East Machias and Annie Lindsey from Massachusetts, many nieces and nephews and many friends who loved him as family. His hardy laugh and great sense of humor will truly be missed.

In honor of Jasper, a memorial picnic will be held at Downeast Horizons Ellsworth Center on Aug. 23.

TRENTON

Faith P. Kenney, 72, passed peacefully on July 30, 2018, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth, Maine. She was born Aug. 2, 1945, in Massachusetts, the daughter of Gordon E. and Emily M. (Sherman) Kenney. She is survived by her brother Forrest Kenney of Nashua, N.H., nephews Skip and Todd Kenney of Florida, beloved nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind three very special people who referred to her as “Grandma” and her two birds Elliott and Blue.

Besides her parents she was predeceased by a sister Florence Kenney and brother Floyd.

She graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree of education. Her career and love of children began as a special education teacher in Orlando, Fla. The highlight of her career was helping and mentoring a young special needs girl who was nonverbal and being failed by the school system. She fought for this little girl which resulted in allowing her to move into general education environment. This young woman ended up successfully performing two jobs where she directly dealt with the public, which at one time was an unachievable goal. Later in her career Faith, upon moving to Maine, became a kindergarten teacher at the Trenton Elementary School where she continued to touch the lives of many children.

Faith was a seamstress, an avid knitter and craftsperson. She found great joy in making handmade clothing for children and dolls, knitting hats for premature babies and sewing beautiful quilts. Some of her happiest moments came from giving her handmade gifts to family and friends, where you could see that every stitch was made with love.

Faith was a communicant of Church of our Father in Hulls Cove, Maine, where she worshipped and made many life long close friends. She will be missed by many. Per her request there will be no services. There will be a celebration of her life at a later date. Gifts in her memory may be made to the SPCA at 141 Bar Harbor Road, Trenton, Maine 04605 or to a charity of your choice.

GOULDSBORO

Everett (Pa) Potter Sr. embraced life for 101 years, 9 months and 13 days before peacefully letting go on July 30, 2018, surrounded by his family. There was a celebration in heaven as he was reunited with his bride of 78 years, Katherine (Stanley) Potter.

He was born the fifth child of Stephen and Ida (Scofield) Potter on Oct. 17, 1916. Siblings gone before him were baby Richard at 10 months, Beatrice at age 18, Thelma (Potter) Bunker age 82 and George who lived to be 91.

Everett attended the Morton Bunker School in South Gouldsboro but preferred being in the woods or down to the shore. As a young boy he developed a lifelong love of lobster fishing and hunting. Tales of his years on the ocean came naturally as it was the livelihood from which he provided for his wife and five children. He fished out of South Gouldsboro, the town in which he grew up and where he and Kay raised their family.

Borrowing his father’s punt to haul seven traps is where his commercial fishing career began. He had several boats over the years and eventually retired from the Blue Horizon due to failing eyesight. Macular degeneration may have forced him off the boat, but that didn’t slow him down any.

He continued to spend most of his time outside doing yard work or tending his gardens and had a passion for cutting, splitting and piling wood. On the days he couldn’t be outdoors, he might be found inside loading shells or cleaning his guns and likely had a dog under his feet or in his lap.

Dancing was another indoor activity that Ma and Pa enjoyed together, which was fitting because that was how they met. But for as much as they liked to dance, they thrived on being with friends and family, whether it be a church service, a party or holiday gathering. They took pride in their close-knit family and enjoyed watching them grow in number, always thankful and blessed by the results of a young love that blossomed back in 1937.

The family said farewell to Ma in 2015 and as Pa’s days here on Earth have come to an end we would like to extend our thanks to the staff of Narraguagus Bay Health Care, Milbridge as well as Beacon Hospice, Bangor. For those of you that went above and beyond your typical day’s duties and treated him with so much love and respect, please know that we will be forever grateful. Special thanks to Raymond Strout for checking in on his “Ol’ Buddy” often and for being such a good friend.

Condolences may be expressed at bragdonkelley.com and per Pa’s request, his memorial service will be held at “the church in South Gouldsboro where Ma wanted me to go to Sunday school when I was a boy.”

Family and friends are invited to The Solid Rock Bible Baptist Church in South Gouldsboro, 769 South Gouldsboro Road, on Sunday, Aug. 19, 2018, at 2 p.m. Immediately following there will be a celebration in front of the Lion Lodge (next to church) until 5:30ish. Feel free to stop by anytime to help us honor:

ORONO

Dr. Charles Walter Major, 92, died reluctantly (so many books left unread, “Game of Thrones” isn’t finished!) on Aug. 1, 2018, in Bangor, surrounded by his family. He was born Jan. 30, 1926, to Charles David Major and Alice Marie (Rabbitt) Major in Framingham, Mass.; a time when movies were 10 cents, and a day in the hospital cost $6.

He graduated from Framingham High School (’43), Dartmouth College (’48), and the University of Tennessee (Ph.D. ’57) He subsequently taught at the Rochester (N.Y.) School of Medicine, and then at the University of Maine, Orono for 33 years, until his retirement in 1992.

He enlisted in the Navy at age 17 during WWII, and was commissioned at 19 from Notre Dame Midshipman School. He was recalled during the Korean War, overall serving 33 months of sea duty as a deck officer on destroyers and destroyer escorts in the Western Pacific, North Atlantic and Mediterranean.

He swiftly married his true love, Mary Henderson, of Brooks, Ga., before being shipped out in 1951. They then had 61 wonderful years of wry humor, and loving companionship while raising a family and traveling the world. They enjoyed their birds, squirrels, chipmunks, bobcats, skunks, Delta the raccoon and other visitors to their yard, all of which he fed daily.

He fought for civil rights all his life, active in Anderson County, Tenn., during the desegregation crisis at Clinton High School in the ’50s, and was a driver for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference during Martin Luther King Jr.’s funeral in Atlanta, ’68. Politically active all his life, he worked on campaigns as a resource for Al Gore Sr., Ed Muskie, Bill Hathaway and George Mitchell. He was a delegate to many state Democratic conventions, and served on several platform committees, notably during the contentious Vietnam era. He also served on both the Penobscot and Hancock County committees.

He was a relentless and vocal advocate for unions, serving tirelessly on the board of the Maine Teachers Association, as a member of the National Education Association’s Human Rights Committee and as the chief negotiator during the establishment of the Associated Faculties of the University of Maine. He was also the American Association of University Professors organizer for the state of Maine.

Charlie also served on many local committees, and chaired the Town of Lamoine’s Comprehensive Plan.

He was proud of his family’s contribution to the Framingham Heart Study, which started in 1948 and continues today with the fourth generation of families. He was a participant in the neurological study started in 1997, and was a postmortem brain tissue donor.

He was a true Renaissance man, a doctorate in science, a respected professor and researcher, who also wrote wonderful poetry and was able to recite the Roman emperors in chronological order. He could (and would) debate on just about any topic, but totally without malice, because he adored a mental challenge.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary, and brother, Thomas. He is survived by daughters, Nancy Tice and her husband, Steven, of North Yarmouth, Elizabeth Rolfe and her husband, Brian, of Phippsburg, son, Charles Major and his wife, Susan (Hillman), of Orono; grandchildren: June (French) Geoffroy, Anne French, John French, Michael Rolfe, Stephen Rolfe, Tony Major, Andrew Major, Michael Tice, and Robert Tice; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a life celebration gathering Aug. 24, at Dirigo Pines, 9 Alumni Drive, Orono, from 1-4 p.m.

Those who wish to remember Charlie in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the Lamoine Volunteer Fire Department, 606 Douglas Highway, Lamoine, ME 04605.

Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com.

Upon graduation from Cazenovia High School, he forged his father’s signature on enlistment documents to enter military service and served as a corpsman aboard the USS Salerno Bay, a U.S. Marine aircraft carrier during World War II.

Upon military discharge he attended and graduated from Plattsburgh State College. John married his first wife, Dorie Brown Bennett, and moved to Long Island. Dorie predeceased John in 1988. John began his career as a history teacher at Mattituck High School. During his teaching career he was a lead official in the Eastern Long Island division of varsity basketball referees.

Following his teaching years, he changed careers to work for Dawes Laboratory. During the early ’60s, he served as special assistant to Perry Duryea to draw up legislative districts.

John came back to the field of education as assistant to the superintendent in Middle Country and as director for special projects for the superintendent of Suffolk 2 BOCES. That position led to his selection in 1974 as executive director of the New York State Council of School Superintendents, a post he held until his retirement in 1990. Under his leadership the council grew in stature as an important organization in the Albany legislative arena and New York public education.

John was a member of the Delray Dunes CC, Winter Harbor Yacht Club, Palm Beach Society of Four Arts and the American Legion.

John’s culinary skills were legendary with generous hospitality to family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Margaret Bennett, sister-in-law Barbara Bennett, brother-in-law Howard Flierl and wife Bonnie, and Brother-in-law Peter Flierl and wife, Shirley, plus nieces and nephews. John and Margaret’s mutual love and admiration were tested by John’s penchant for finding keys allowing access to the family car. Friends commented after his passing “John again found the hidden auto keys and drove himself to heaven.”

A celebration service will be held Sunday, Aug. 19, at 3 p.m. in St. Christopher’s Church, Winter Harbor, followed by a reception at the Winter Harbor Yacht Club.

MOUNT DESERT

Barbara Jean Gilfillan passed away on Aug. 9, 2018, peacefully amongst her loving family and her closest companion these past six years, Holly, her beloved Corgi.

Born Jan. 9, 1933, to Fred and Nettie Blanchard on Beech Hill, Somesville, she recounted many memories about what life was like in simpler times. In 1954, she met her future husband, Robert Lawrence Gilfillan. Together they had four children, Bonnie Lee Gilfillan, James Michael Gilfillan, Karen Ann Gilfillan-Eno and Sandra Gilfillan. Raising her children kept her busy. Once they had grown and in school, she joined Robert to manage the family business, West End Drug Co.

In January 2005, she retired to pursue her passion for gardening. Her green thumb was evident everywhere you looked in her yard and she would remark that her work was never done. There was so much more she wanted to plant and see grow. Into her later years she continued her love of gardening by growing orchids and many other plants at her home. Remarkably, the day of her passing, an amaryllis that she had given Bonnie came into full bloom. Her struggles in later years with back pain made many things more difficult but she continued to the best of her abilities and treasured the closeness of her caring family.

She will be missed by her children, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Private graveside services will be held in her memory by her family. In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara’s memory may be made to the Somesville Village Improvement Society and the Jesup Memorial Library.

A private graveside service will be held 11 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 19, 2018, at Ledgelawn Cemetery, Bar Harbor.

Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert. Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.

BREWER

Elsie R. Frost, 91, died peacefully at Woodlands Nursing Home in Brewer, Aug. 8, 2018. Daughter of Byron L. and Mary Brown Robinson, she was one of five daughters who grew up in Southwest Harbor. In recent years, she had been a long-term resident at Woodlands who never lost her wonderful sense of humor and her love of dancing and caring about all animals.

She married Lyle Frost, the love of her life, soon out of high school. She worked at the Hinckley Co. while her husband served in the Air Force during WWII. Lyle was a game warden, who died tragically at age 42. She and her husband had an adventurous life together while they were stationed up on the Canadian border and other interesting places. She loved that life, living in different places.

Elsie loved the woods and animals. She even had a pet fox who went everywhere with her.

After her husband died, she became an independent woman and continued to live in their home in Sullivan taking care of herself, her home and her cats, always ready with a joke or a sarcastic comment. A beautiful woman, Elsie will be missed.
