TRENTON – Dorothy Bucklin died Feb. 22, 2017, at Courtland Rehabilitation and Living Center in Ellsworth. She was born in Lamoine, Dec. 13, 1931, the daughter of Samuel Bunker and Blanche Ida (Chamberlain).

Dorothy was a graduate of Brooksville High School, in which she received the Book of Etiquette upon graduation. Her favorite hobbies were: music, sewing, knitting and raising cocker spaniels. For many years she found great joy in operating the home of the friendliest cocker spaniels known as Oak Point Kennels. She had a passion for gardening — especially fruit trees, flowers and vegetables. Dorothy loved cooking, baking and serving others.

Dorothy worked many jobs over the years. She worked at Hannaford Supermarkets, worked as a baker and worked for Coastal Agency, to name a few of her many “jobs.” She studied real estate and earned her sales and broker’s license. She eventually opened her own real estate office — Oak Point Real Estate in Trenton. Dorothy never stopped learning and in retirement she got her CDL License. Dottie did a lot of public service. She helped build the Trenton School, was a selectman, assessor, served on the school board and was overseer of the poor for her beloved hometown. Dottie was a lady ahead of her time. Her work ethic was impeccable.

She loved her husband, Edward, and their many adventures which included traveling, square dancing, and just being together. Her greatest joy was her children. She was proud of each of them for all their own unique talents.

Dorothy had a love of Jesus and was a lifelong believer. Her spirituality always rested with the Holy Father. She neither held grudges nor dwelled on the past. Dottie was unable to work or enjoy her hobbies the last years of her life due to health issues; however, she was able to reside at home with loving care and support. She will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Dorothy’s memory would be greatly appreciated to the SPCA of Hancock County, 141 Bar Harbor Road, Trenton, ME 04605.

She is survived by her children, Constance Severence, Jan Michael Ryan, and Susan Waite; four stepchildren, Suzanne Cantnese and her family, Belinda Fletcher and her family, Martha Fleck, and Charles Bucklin and his family; 12 grandchildren, Patty Staples, Jan Rossi, Melanie Dutra, Shannon Ryan, William Ryan, Jeremy Ryan, Debbie Ryan, Todd Waite, Samantha Severence, Ashley Ryan, Mariah Ryan, and Christopher Ryan; 12 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 35 years, Edward Bucklin. They were married on Feb. 20, 1970. She was also predeceased by her son Jeffrey Ryan; grandson Jessie Ryan; brothers Samuel Bunker and Larry Farrell; and stepsisters Norma Nixon and Fern Havey.

Friends are invited to call 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2017, at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 19, 2017.

BAR HARBOR – Ronald E. Hurd Jr., 68, died unexpectedly Feb. 21, 2017, while on vacation in Florida. He valiantly fought an unexpected illness with family supporting him every minute of every day. He was born on May 21, 1948, in Portland, the son of the late Doris (LaFleur) Hurd and Ronald E. Hurd Sr.

Ronnie graduated from Thomas College and Waterville High School. He married his sweetheart, Marlene Larson, on July 1, 1972, and they settled in Bar Harbor. They would have celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary this year. Ron and Marlene had their only daughter, Sara, in 1979. She was the apple of his eye. Ronnie was a store manager for LaVerdiere’s drug stores for 25 years. For the last 20 years of his career he worked at the Jackson Laboratory. He retired from the Jackson Lab in 2015, although he still worked a few hours each week. He cherished his co-workers, friends and breakfast club buddies at the Lab.

Ronnie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He would always lend a helping hand for people in need. His desire to help, mentor and be there for others may be his greatest legacy. Ron lived life to the fullest. He was full of energy and motivation. Ronnie loved golfing at Kebo, fishing on the lakes of MDI, playing poker with his Wednesday night group, and riding his motorcycle around the island. The experiences he shared with his golfing, fishing and poker buddies shaped his life. His competitive streak was contagious, and his sense of humor was an acquired taste. He enjoyed organizing anything and everything and loved puttering in his basement and garage. He was a founding member of the Kiwanis Club in Ellsworth, active with Big Brothers & Big Sisters in Bar Harbor, and coached Odyssey of the Mind over the years. Ronnie was an extremely proud father and grandfather.

Ronnie is survived by his beloved wife, Marlene (Larson) Hurd; his daughter Sara O’Connell and her husband, Davin O’Connell; his two sisters Sandra Hurd and Patricia Isgro; his step-mother Evelyn Hurd, niece Jennie Isgro and his beloved granddaughter Ella O’Connell.

A celebration of Ronnie’s life will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, March 4, 2017, at the Congregational Church, UCC, 29 Mount Desert St., Bar Harbor. Please dress casually, as this represents what he would have wanted. Gifts in Ron’s memory can be made to the MDI YMCA, 21 Park St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609 to help support the children in our community. Our family is grateful for the tremendous support during this difficult time.

Arrangements in care of Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert.

John Michael Scott

ELLENSBURG, WASH./LAMOINE – John Michael Scott of Ellensburg, Wash., died suddenly at his home on Feb. 8, 2017. He was born on Feb. 26, 1941, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to John H. Scott and Constance L. Scott.

Following his idyllic childhood, he began his travels to a number of locations throughout the country. First he went to Maine as a teenager, then off to California for community college. After a couple years, he returned to Hawaii and worked as a stevedore and attended the University of Hawaii. During his time in Hawaii, Michael worked as a roofer, head of security at night clubs in Honolulu, before starting his own gym with his very dear friend Gary Watanabe.

The legendary Power Pit gym opened in November 1978 and closed in 1989. Through the years at the Power Pit, Michael and Gary created something very special. They had such a variety of people, all with different reasons for joining the gym, but with the philosophy that they all belonged. Michael often referred to the Power Pit as being a true Ohana. The iron game was always a large part of Michael’s life, whether he was participating himself or serving as a coach or mentor in Olympic lifting, powerlifting, bodybuilding, or strength sports. Michael was fortunate to begin his weightlifting career under the three-time Olympic medalist Tommy Kono. One of Michael’s trademarks throughout the years was his long beautiful blond hair. He use to love telling the story of Arnold Schwarzenegger telling him, “Michael, you should have been Conan,” for the movie “Conan the Barbarian.” After spending most of his life in Hawaii, Michael moved back to Maine in 1995 and became a landscaper. He truly loved the demands of physical labor and working outdoors.

Looking for a new adventure in 2006, Michael moved to Ellensburg, Wash., with his beloved wife, Kristy. They built a home and became happy members of their new community. Michael worked for Kittitas County for the last 10 years for the noxious weed control board. He thoroughly enjoyed his work and his co-workers; retirement was not in his immediate plans. Michael felt his work and activity kept him young, both physically and mentally. He was frequently complimented on his youthful appearance.

Michael, also known as Mike, Mickey and even “Iron Mike” from his days as a powerlifter, made many good friends wherever he went. He lived life with enthusiasm and had a tremendous heart. Michael was passionate about so many things in life, whether drag racing or any other sport for that matter, current world news, music, fine dining; he found a way to connect with everyone he came in contact with. He was a great conversationalist and was genuinely kind, caring, and compassionate. Michael attracted people with his infectious personality, big smile, and sparkle in his eyes. His aloha spirit shined brightly no matter where he traveled.

In addition to his devoted wife, Kristy, he leaves his sisters Susan and Gretchen, his brother Geff, his stepmother Margaret Armstrong, and Deanna Nollette-Diaz whom he long thought of as his dear daughter. Michael cherished the friends he made throughout his life and he was loved by so many of them. He will be deeply missed yet his legacy will live on in all those he touched.

There will be a celebration of life for Michael on Saturday, March 11, at the Outrigger Canoe Club, 2909 Kalakaua Ave., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Nature Conservancy in memory of Michael. Please come to share your fond memories. Feel free to bring along your favorite picture to contribute to a memorial board.

Wm. “Buzz” Knight

ELLSWORTH – Wm. “Buzz” Knight passed away Feb. 24, 2017, at the VA Medical Center at Togus after a brief period of declining health. He was born July 28, 1942, in Ellsworth, the son of William B. and Ruth M. (Austin) Knight.

He was a graduate of Ellsworth High School, Class of 1960. Buzz graduated from the University of Maine in 1964 with a degree in political science. He remained an avid fan of the Maine Black Bears men’s hockey team throughout his life. He joined the Marine Corps in November of 1966, graduating from Officer Candidate School in March of 1967. He went on to flight school and then helicopter school before serving as a medevac pilot in Vietnam throughout 1968. It was in Vietnam that Buzz was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry, stemming from an incident where he evacuated an entire reconnaissance patrol of Marines whose position was about to be overrun, overloading his helicopter in the process, but getting everyone to safety. Upon his return to the United States, Buzz became a flight instructor for the Marines in Meridian, Miss. He was honored to be chosen as flight instructor of the year (1970) for the entire Marine Corps. In 1972, Buzz, now a captain, extended his commitment to the Marine Corps to become a career officer. While attending advanced training at Quantico Marine Base in Virginia, he was struck by a car while jogging, suffering injuries that would end his military service. After his initial recovery, he returned to his parents’ home on the Shore Road, where his parents continued his care. It was during this period that Buzz and his father traveled extensively in Downeast Maine and the Canadian Maritimes, enjoying many adventures together. Eventually, the demands of Buzz’s care became too much for his parents, and he became a resident of the nursing home care unit at the VA Medical Center at Togus. Buzz will be remembered for his bravery, his sense of humor, and his strong love for his family.

He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Joan (Knight) Day. He is survived by a niece, Kelly Bliss of Dunedin, Fla., and a nephew, William Day of Gilford, N.H., and their respective families.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the VA Medical Center for the years of loving care they gave to Buzz.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider a gift to the Maine VA Medical Center, c/o Marine Corps League, 1 VA Center, Augusta, ME 04330, or the Ellsworth Public Library, 20 State St., Ellsworth, ME 04605.

Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. Burial will be at the Woodbine Cemetery in Ellsworth in the spring.

ORLAND – Dr. George McKay Lord Jr., 81, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2017, at Eastern Maine Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 3, 1935, in Bucksport, the son of George McKay Lord Sr. and Vivian Allen Lord.

George was a graduate of Bucksport High School, where he was a football, basketball and baseball four-year varsity athlete, earning the nickname “Lightning Legs Sonny.” He went on to earn a B.S. at the University of Maine, Orono, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. After his studies at Orono, George completed his doctorate degree at the Illinois College of Optometry, where he was a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa Honor Society. George practiced optometry for 34 years serving his patients of Bucksport, Winterport, Hampden and many other surrounding towns before turning their care over to his son Steven.

George knew in his heart he lived a full and blessed life, sharing his life’s interests with his wife, Nancy, who was the center of his world, his family, and his close friends. He enjoyed field trials and bird hunting with his English Setters, going on fishing trips with his son and Dead Stream Pond buddies, biking in Acadia with family and abroad with friends, playing the ukulele and sweet potato horn to his children and grandchildren, jamming on the baritone horn in the 9-Song Band, playing bridge, skiing, boating on the lake, making peanut butter fudge, sharing stories and marshmallows around the campfire, coaching softball in the early years and being an ever-present fan in later years at his grandchildren’s games and activities.

Family time together was never in short supply. Gatherings at the family home in Bucksport, the camp on Toddy Pond, and the house at Sugarloaf were full of laughter and fun and a source of great joy for George and his extended family. By example he showed his children and grandchildren the values he held close, and they are forever grateful to him for playing such a prominent role in shaping their lives.

He is survived by Nancy Jewett Lord, his wife of 58 years, of East Orland; his three children, Holly Jenkins and her husband, Ted, of Andover, Mass., Jill Bowden and her husband, Greg, of Newburyport, Mass., and Steven Lord and his wife, Jeanne, of Hampden; his six grandchildren, Benjamin and Bryce Jenkins, Emily and Caleb Bowden, and Tyler and Abby Lord.

His family wishes to thank the nurses and doctors of EMMC for their tender care during his last days. Gifts in his memory may be made to Elm Street Congregational Church, P.O. Box 838, Bucksport, ME 04416, where George was an active member and past trustee.

A memorial service and celebration of his life will take place on Saturday, March 11, at 1 p.m. at the Elm Street Congregation Church. Dessert and coffee will follow in Brown Hall.

Arrangements are under the direction and care of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Bucksport. (mitchelltweedie-young.com)

HANCOCK – Timothy J. Manning, 52, of Hancock, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Feb. 28, 2017. Tim was born on July 26, 1964, in Brockton, Mass., and moved to Sullivan in his early years. He graduated from Sumner Memorial High School, where he was an all-star baseball and soccer player. Upon graduation, he attended Eastern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in Bangor. Tim began his fishing career at the young age of 20, working as a sternman, before purchasing his own vessel and becoming known as “Captain Tim,” a name that is recognized throughout the entire fishing community. He dragged mussels up and down the coast for the last 32 years.

Tim was even more well known for his incredible knowledge of hunting, fishing and tracking. Every season, his driveway would be full of hunters from dawn until dusk and the garage full of bucks. Nights spent cutting and packaging up meat and telling stories was a staple in the Manning household. Any question that was asked Tim knew the answer and any story that was told, Tim was usually involved.

Tim is survived by his mother, Jeanne and stepfather Roy Warren; son Michael and his wife, Jackie, and their daughter Wendy; daughter Natasha; stepdaughter Lexi Handy; four brothers, Sean and his two sons Mickey and Dustin; Joey and his wife, Kelly, and their son Chris; Jimmy and his wife, Sheila, and Jimmy’s son Matthew; Roy and his wife, Billy-Jo, and their children Cameron, Delanie, Damon and Madlyn; several aunts, uncles and cousins; his longtime girlfriend Shelly Scott and her son Dylan Tracey.

Tim was predeceased by his father, Timothy.

He will never be forgotten.

Our memories of the ocean will linger on, long after our footprints in the sand are gone.
