Lois Crabtree Johnson

Lois Crabtree Johnson, 86, died Sept. 9, 2018, in the same house in which she was born on March 28, 1932, to Leroy Brown and Lura (Young) Crabtree.

She graduated from Ellsworth High School and worked at the Canal National Bank in Portland until her marriage in 1951 to Justin Oley Johnson Jr., who predeceased her in 1999. During a 25-year residency in Levittown, Pa., Lois was actively involved in her community, serving a total of 121 years of direct volunteer service and on the board of directors of such agencies as Youth Employment Service, Voluntary Action Council, Planned Parenthood, United Way, Human Services Council, Church Women United, YWCA of Bucks County as well as the First Baptist Church of Levittown and the First Presbyterian Church of Levittown.

Upon her husband’s retirement and their return to Hancock in 1982, Lois again committed herself to the community, serving a total of 64 years to the Union Congregational Church of Hancock, UCC, the Hancock School Committee, the Hancock Board of Appeals, the Hancock Historical Society, the Hancock County Genealogical Society and Friends of Taunton Bay.

Lois became an accomplished genealogist, compiling over 25 Hancock family records and having 19 of those published in the Maine Historical Society’s “Maine Families-1790” series.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Justin III; sisters, Hazel Hagen and Ruth Gregory; brother, Gerald Crabtree. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Ducharme and Richard Johnson; her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Miky Johnson; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sister, Alice Souther; cousin, Bertha Smith who holds a very special place in our family; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Union Congregational Church of Hancock, UCC at 10:30 a.m., Sept. 22, 2018, followed by interment at Riverside Cemetery in Hancock.
