BLUE HILL
Kenneth W. Vogt, 79, passed away at home in Blue Hill on Aug. 15 surrounded by his loving family. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Ken was born on Dec. 30, 1938. He was the son of Robert K. Vogt and Wilhelmine Hassebrock Vogt.
He attended Cincinnati Country Day School and graduated from Williams College in 1960. He and Anne Paxson Yoder were married in 1961. Ken attended a summer program in liberal studies at Wesleyan College and Yale University’s summer art school. He also attended arts programs at the University of Colorado and workshops in pottery at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts.
In 1971, Ken and his young family moved to Penobscot, where they built their own home. He, along with his wife, started the pottery studio at The HOME Co-op, where they taught pottery classes for two years before leaving to start work in their own studio, The Clay Studio. He was an early member of Directions Craft Guild. He, his wife and two fellow craftsmen started the Directions Craft Fair on MDI, which is now in its 41st consecutive year.
Ken had a long career in admissions, public relations, fundraising and teaching pottery and photography at several private educational institutions: Eaglebrook School, Oakwood School, George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill, Husson University and the Bangor Seminary.
After retiring, Ken returned to work in his pottery studio and he continued to advise local, nonprofit groups in their fundraising efforts. He was a lover of great food, jazz music, tennis and beautiful crafts.
He is survived by his wife, son Robert Kenneth Vogt and life partner Terry Wong, daughter Elizabeth Vogt Kreitzer and husband Andrew Kreitzer, granddaughter Anna Kreitzer, brother Ronald Vogt and wife, Ellen Deddens Vogt, sister Roberta Keller, nephew Lee Keller and by marriage: nephews Tom and Ted Yoder and niece Jennifer DeJoy.
