BUCKSPORT

William L. Higgins, 74, passed away on June 28 at EMMC in Bangor after a massive stroke a few days before in the Hannaford parking lot in Bucksport. He was born in Lamoine on Oct. 10, 1943, the son of Maxine Higgins. He was known as “Sonny” to his relatives and “Bill” to his friends.

He attended Ellsworth High School and vocational/technical school in Portland. He worked at various jobs around Ellsworth, where he lived for many years, some of them in a cabin he built on Graham Lake. He moved to Orland in 1992 and lived on the grounds of HOME Co-op most of that time in a shack behind the woodshop. He had a small garden with a tomato patch and he kept several cats and many birds well-fed. He had just gotten into senior housing in Bucksport one month before his death. His friends thank the manager and people at Hannaford for the prompt attention and getting medical help immediately.

Sonny (aka Bill) is survived by three half-siblings, Marc, Jeffrey, and Danielle Moreau, in the Dover, N.H., area, and many Higgins relatives in Maine.

A requiem service will be held in the Wayside Chapel of St. Francis at HOME Co-op in Orland on Wednesday, July 25, at 11 a.m. Bill’s ashes will be spread in his tomato patch and the location for his memorial stone has not been determined. To get or share more information, call 469-7961.
