ELLSWORTH

Richard Alton Woodworth, 82, died June 22, 2018, at his home. He was born in Bar Harbor, Feb. 18, 1936, the son of Henry Alton and Queenie Viola (Ames) Woodworth.

He attended school in Bar Harbor, graduating from Bar Harbor High School in 1955, and attended Farmington State College.

Richard served in the U.S. Army from 1958-1961.

Dick was an avid gardener who beautified any outdoor spot he touched, his favorite being the grounds of Nadine and Dick’s first home in Town Hill. When not gardening, he spent many hours acquiring a huge coin and stamp collection.

Dick was greatly affected as a result of needing to be evacuated from Bar Harbor with his family and “Teddy Bear” at the time of the Bar Harbor fire in 1947. His bear survives to this day.

Dick and Nadine would have celebrated 40 years of marriage on Nov. 11, 2018. He was previously married to Donna Shakelford of Bangor.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Nadine; sons, Ronald, Kenneth and James of Bangor; daughter, Marly Sachsman of Ellsworth; four grandchildren, Darith of Arizona, Amanda of Salisbury Cove, Sarah of Vermont and Carlie of Winter Harbor; five great-grandchildren; brother, Roger and his daughter Jodie both of Sorrento. He was predeceased by his parents; sons, Paul Woodworth and George Sachsman.

A graveside service will be held 1 p.m., Friday, July 20, 2018, at Ledgelawn Cemetery, Bar Harbor.

Contributions in Dick’s memory may be made to the SPCA of Hancock County, 141 Bar Harbor Road, Trenton, ME 04605.
