BASKING RIDGE, N.J.
Dorothy C. Herklotz, 93, (nee Hambacher) of Basking Ridge, N.J., died on Aug. 31, 2017, at the Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, at the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church, 1 E. Oak St. at S. Finley Ave., Basking Ridge, N.J.
Mrs. Herklotz was born in Bloomfield, N.J., and lived in Basking Ridge for the past 64 years.
She graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1942 and then went to work at New Jersey Bell as a stenographer for nine years. Later she worked as an evening bookkeeping machine operator at a local bank. Dorothy was a school bus driver in Bernards Township for 16 years and went on to AT&T to work as a secretary for 12 years.
Mrs. Herklotz was a member of the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church, since 1955, teaching Sunday school for many years, greeting church members for worship services and knitting mittens for the church’s mitten tree program. She was a member of the Business & Professional Women of Bernardsville for more than 25 years, receiving an award for her achievements as a volunteer. The BPW is an organization committed to supporting women in their professional and personal lives. Dorothy was a lifetime member and a secretary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7858 Ladies Auxiliary. She also was a volunteer for the Telephone Pioneers of America, “answering the call of those in need” through the areas of life enrichment, health and human services, military projects, education and environment projects. One of her most notable projects was creating countless lap robes for the AT&T Pioneers Lap Robe Project. Dorothy’s favorite form of volunteering was for the Environmental Education Center in Lord Stirling Park at the annual Festival of Trees in December. She loved the ambience created by the atmosphere and all the people.
Dorothy was predeceased by the love of her life, Lewis P. Herklotz Sr., in March of 2007, who was a pen pal during WWII for 2½ years before they met. They were married in August 1945. She was also predeceased by her brother, Charles Hambacher of Bloomfield.
She and her husband, Lew, enjoyed traveling to Europe, the Caribbean, the South Pacific, and throughout all of these great United States; but their favorite times were the summers spent, since 1960, at Georges Pond in Franklin with their sons.
Dorothy is survived by her sons Lewis P. Herklotz Jr. and Mark T. Herklotz of Basking Ridge, N.J., Keith C. Herklotz of Blue Hill, her granddaughter Katie S. Herklotz of San Diego, Calif., and a grandson, Wesley, of Montague, N.J. She is also survived by her brother Norman and his wife, Miriam Hambacher, of Allans, Tenn., her sister Carol and her husband, Bob Hartman, of Naples, Fla., and her sister Janice and husband, George Funk, of Montville, N.J.
