BLUE HILL – Albert “Tim” Tilden Sprague IV, 63, passed away March 9 at his home in Blue Hill after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Originally from Marshfield, Mass., Tim moved to Duxbury, Mass., in the early ’70s, working for Sweetster’s General Store through the mid-1980s. He was also a valued worker with the Badger Co., a subsidiary of Raytheon in Cambridge, Mass., from the mid-1980s until the late 1990s. He was also a successful fisherman, providing mussels and other shellfish to many area establishments and to fine New York City restaurants. After retiring to Blue Hill, Tim pursued his passions for antique collecting, playing pool, salmon fishing and creating and maintaining magnificent gardens at his home with his loving wife and companion, Nancy. Their gardens were routinely included in the annual garden tours of the area.
Tim was immensely proud of his heritage being a direct descendant of Englishman William Sprague, who arrived in Massachusetts in 1628 and, along with his brothers, helped co-found the city of Charlestown and shaped the future of Mass. Another ancestor, Captain Seth Ford Sprague, was the first to carry an American flag aboard a naval ship, the Smyrna, into the Black Sea. Tim’s grandfather was a rear admiral, and his father Albert T. Sprague III, was a commander in the U.S. Navy.
Tim was a fascinating storyteller, a “trouble-making” prankster, a source of great amusement to all who knew him, and a caring and thoughtful neighbor and friend to so very many.
Beyond his wife, Nancy, Tim is survived by his two stepdaughters Laura Alinovi and Sara Alinovi, Sarah’s husband Anthony McComas; his sister Jennifer Sprague Zwiebel; neice Erin Ann Robertson; and nephew Matthew Albert Zweibel.
A private celebration of Tim’s life will be held with family members and select close friends May 7, and the First Annual Timmy Sprague Memorial Pool Tournament will be held at Tag’s Pool Hall in Ellsworth Sunday afternoon, May 15. The brackets are already filled, but spectators and well-wishers are most welcome.
