ELLSWORTH — Wilbur G. York, 91, died peacefully at home May 11, 2017, surrounded by his family and caregiver William Higgins. He was born in York April 1, 1926, the son of George W. and Almira N. (Card) York.
Wilbur, his sister Shirley and their parents lived on Mount Desert Rock Lighthouse for 10 years. He and his sister were featured in lighthouse magazines and he wrote about his experiences. School of the Atlantic had them speak of living on the rock. A sharp wit and dry sense of humor was always a pleasant experience. He graduated from Ellsworth High School Class of 1944. He was a WWII veteran serving in the U.S. Navy. Wilbur drove the school bus in Blue Hill for 25 years; all the kids called him Yorkie. He also worked for Wyman’s Blueberry in the summer for many years. Wilbur would often refer to his large pension of double figures. He belonged to the Grange for 55 years. After retiring he served and worked at the Ellsworth Congregational Church.
He is survived by daughters, Rose Duran and husband, John, of Casco, Faye Greenlaw and husband, Berton, of Hebron; son, George H. York of Gray; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren; sister, Kay Murray of Rochester, N.Y.; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Shirley Robinson and Beverly Poole; stepmom, Dorothy Dodge York; and life partner, Wilda N. Higgins.
Calling hours were held May 15, 2017, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with a funeral service officiated by Rev. Nick Davis. Interment was at Woodbine Cemetery.
