AVON, CONN. — Florence Mary Treworgy Benham passed away peacefully at home on April 10, 2017. She was born in 1921 to Augustus Treworgy and Bertha Green Treworgy in Blue Hill.
Florence graduated from George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill, received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maine, then went on to receive her Master’s Degree from Western Connecticut State University.
In her younger years, Florence enjoyed horseback riding, tennis, swimming, badminton and was picked for the All-Maine Girls Basketball Team while at UMaine.
She taught Home Economics at Newport High School, Holden High School, Mass., Darien High School, Conn. and finally settled in Greenwich, Conn., where she taught both at the junior and senior high school levels until her retirement in 1986. After retirement she was active at her church, and continued refining her talents as a seamstress, cook, gardener, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Florence was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Donald George Benham. She is survived by her daughter Patricia Benham Alonzy; “favorite” son-in-law Jerry Alonzy, Canton, Conn., Florence’s son, Jeffrey Benham and wife, Debra, Surry. She also leaves 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
