ELLSWORTH — Frederick N. Grant, 86, died peacefully at his home April 24, 2017, after a long battle with heart disease. He was born in West Ellsworth, June 16, 1930, the only son of the late Arthur and Abbie (Trundy) Grant.
He was a devoted husband, father, friend and mentor to many. He lived a simple life whose door was always open to those who knocked. He grew up in Ellsworth, where he attended school and graduated from Ellsworth High School, Class of 1947. In 1949, he married his devoted wife of 54 years, Carolyn (Ryder) Grant.
In early years he worked for local auto shops in the area as well as for the Ellsworth School Department in transportation and maintenance. In 1968, he joined the Secretary of State Motor Vehicle Division as a driver’s license examiner. In 1973, he accepted the position of examiner supervisor, the position he held until his retirement in 1985. During those years he attended courses at Northwestern Traffic Institute and served as training officer for several years.
Fred was a 50-plus year member of Arbutus Grange No. 450 in Surry, a 64 year member of the Lygonia Lodge No. 40 AF&AM, a member of the Irene Chapter and Order of Eastern Star No. 97 in Ellsworth.
He is survived by three sons, David of Warren, Paul and his wife, Lynn, and Kenneth and wife, Jennifer, all of Ellsworth; daughter, Christine Grant and significant other Adam Palmer of Ellsworth; sister, Bertha Grant of Hermon; a loving life partner of several years, Millie Hunt of Ellsworth; seven grandchildren, Kirk of Brewer, Angeline of New Hampshire, Aaron and wife, Stephanie, of Bangor, Morgan and significant other Jasmine Pelotte of Lakewood, Wash., Miranda of Ellsworth, Megan Kyle and husband, Kevin, of Henrico, Va., and Kenneth Jr., of Ellsworth; two great-grandchildren, Stephanie and Felix. He was predeceased by his parents; loving wife Carolyn in 2003; and grandson, Matthew Grant.
Calling hours will be held 6-8 p.m. April 28, 2017, with a Masonic service held at 7 at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where a funeral service will be held April 29 at 1 p.m. Interment will be at Birch Grove Cemetery, Ellsworth
