ELLSWORTH — Thomas “Tom” Hiram Newman Jr. died at the age of 90 on April 1, 2017, in Ellsworth. He was born in Manset on June 4, 1926, the son of Thomas Hiram Newman and Margarite (Bradbury) Newman.

Thomas Newman Jr. was predeceased by brother Keith Newman, sister Mercy Elizabeth (Betty) Nielson, granddaughter Michelle Newman, wife, Connie Newman (to whom he was married for 66 years), and son Jeffrey Newman. He is survived by his sister Vivian Gonzalez of Arizona, his son Thomas Michael Newman and wife, Diana, of Maine, his son David Newman and wife, Vicki, of Maine, his daughter Susan Cecere and husband, Michael, of Virginia, his daughter-in-law Kim Newman of South Carolina, 13 grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Tom graduated from Pemetic High School and served two tours of duty in the U.S. Army, including one in “Patten’s Army” during WWII. He ran Acadia Express Trucking Co. for 30-plus years. Tom valued his family’s longstanding roots in MDI, calling his homeland “God’s Country.” He loved to share a good song, a joke or story to lighten the hearts of others. He enjoyed gardening, attending sports events and cruising down to Seawall. Tom quietly and devotedly served his community with good humor, reliability and generosity.

Special thanks to many who went “above and beyond” to assist Tom, including family members, caregiver Micaela Ward and Hospice.

A celebration of Tom’s life will be held on Saturday, April 22, at 11 a.m. at the American Legion Hall in Southwest Harbor. Interment will be held at a later date at Mount Height Cemetery in Southwest Harbor. Donations in his name can be sent to American Legion Post 69, Box 1022, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679.
