LAS VEGAS, NEV. – On Feb. 24, 2017, Girard W. Owen (Gary) unexpectedly passed away. Gary was born on April 17, 1941, in Blue Hill, to Ralph and Elizabeth Owen. He was an only child and raised with two cousins by his grandmother and Aunt Florence after his parents passed away.
He graduated college with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. From college, he joined the United States Air Force and served our country as a munitions systems specialist. He was stationed in Istanbul, Turkey, and his final destination was Nellis Air Force Base. It was here in Las Vegas that he met the love of his life and wife of 52 years, Dorothy.
Gary joined the City of Las Vegas Fire Department in 1968 and retired as an engineer in 1996. He loved his career as a firefighter. He was also an auto mechanic and had a deep love of restoring, showing and selling old cars. With his family, he loved the sport of rodeo. He loved riding horses with his daughters and grandsons.
Gary is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and his two daughters: Kimberly Thomas, her husband, Rodney, Kathy Banegas, her husband, Alex, and three grandsons, Adam Banegas, Wyatt Thomas and Casey Thomas.
