obit-clement-croppedflagELLSWORTH – Howard B. Clement, 89, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his family. He has gone to be with his beloved wife, Gwen, who passed on July 4, 2016. They are flying high — and surely have their dancing shoes on. He was born on Nov. 12, 1927, in Lamoine, the son of Roscoe and Lavina (Moor) Clement of Ellsworth.

Howard served two years in the U.S. Navy, then 18 years in the Coast Guard. He spent most of those 18 years as a lighthouse keeper. He served on Great Duck Island 1949-1950, then on Bakers Island 1950-1954. He also served at other lighthouses — Egg Rock, Prospect Harbor, Lubec and Calais, among others. He was a past member of the Shriners and a member of the American Post Legion 207 in Trenton. He worked at the State Agency Liquor Store in Ellsworth for 20 years after retirement from the Coast Guard.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by his daughter Nancy in 2009, son-in-law Ronnie Hamilton in 2006, and by his sister Anita Cousins.

Surviving is his son Dwayne and his wife, Esther (Dusti), and their children, son Brian and wife, Pat, and grandchildren Brittany, Oriana and Tyler, and son Craig and wife, Michelle. He is also survived by his daughter Brenda, her husband, Roy, her son, Rob and his daughter, Rhiann, his fiancee, Amy, and her children, Kelly and Koda. Also his granddaughter, Tammy, her husband, Kelvin, their sons Evan and Grayson; many nieces and nephews; other extended family members. A special thank you to his niece Alison Cowan, who helped ease Howard’s mind with their many talks.

A service will be scheduled at a later date. Those who wish to remember Howard in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the American Legion Post 207, 163 Bar Harbor Road, Trenton, ME 04605.
