Marvin “Cap” Allen Shinn

Marvin “Cap” Allen Shinn died peacefully at Soddy Daisy Healthcare in Soddy Daisy, Tenn., on Oct. 22, 2022. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Alice Kathrine Shinn, and his son Charles “Skipper” Shinn. He is survived by his sons Douglas Shinn and his wife, Anna Marie, and her sons Carl and Ben of Clayton, N.J., and Harry “Buzzy” Shinn and his wife, Debbie, of Hixson, Tenn. Cap is survived by his grandchildren Jason Shinn and his wife, Jamee, and their children Landon and Tenley and Maranda Myrick and her husband, John, and their children Lilly and Layla.

He was a longtime resident of New Jersey, where he started in the fishing business at a young age, holding a U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license for over 50 years. Cap started working on his father’s charter boat and was captain on various sport fishing party boats. Then he partnered with John Cole as a commercial fisherman owning and operating the vessels King Fisher and the Atlantic Traveler.

Cap retired to Steuben, where he worked as a sternman with his best friend Perky Pinkham’s lobster boat followed by working at Inland Seafood. Cap joined his son Buzzy to operate and entertain customers on his charter boat Alyce K. Cap was an avid hunter, fisherman and storyteller. Cap was loved and will be missed by his family and many longtime friends. Cap brought much joy and hard work to this world for over 88 years.

The family thanks staffs at StoryPoint Assisted Living, Soddy Daisy Healthcare and Hearth Hospice in Tennessee for making his final years enjoyable and comfortable.
