Douglas DeBeck Smith

Franklin

On September 25, Douglas DeBeck Smith passed away, leaving his wife of 67 years, Joan, and their five children, Darrell, Dean, Dana, Dawn Seavey and Debra Gray.

Doug was born on December 5, 1929, in Franklin to Merle and Olive Smith. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1948. He then enlisted in the Navy, working as a flight deck attendant on the USS Saipan aircraft carrier. After the Navy, he worked for the Maine Central Railroad as a telegrapher for 13 years. Upon retirement from the railroad, he and his brother, Ronnie, went into the wood business together. He loved his hometown of Franklin and worked on school and town matters as a selectman and trustee.

He leaves behind his precious Grandchildren, Jenna, Stacey, Charles, Cory, Matthew, Brianna, Ashley, Dustin, Jessie, Maggie, Anna, Douglas, Rebecca and Sam, as well as 16 great-grandchildren; a very special sister, Sandra Ingalls; much loved son-in-law, John Seavey; and daughter-in-law Kathy Smith. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, some of whom he had many political debates with, and a dear friend, adopted family member and golfing buddy, Darwin Caldwell, and Jeff Albee, who was always there for him.

He was predeceased by his sisters Beverly Allen (George), Jackie Leavitt (Charles) and Eleanor DiBella (Joe), and his brother Ronnie (Cindy).

Services will be held on Oct. 24 at noon at the Franklin Veterans Club with Pastor Bob Maddocks officiating. There will be refreshments after the service.
