On July 6, 2022, Deer Isle-Stonington lost a young and tenacious spirit in lifelong islander Goldie Fairfax (Garcia) Boyce.
Goldie was born in Glendale, Calif., on Dec. 19, 1992, though her true hometown would become the precious maritime village of Stonington, where her mother, Bernadette Fairfax, set her family anchor in the fall of 1997. Serendipitously, the granite bedrock of this island is analogous to the community strength that defined Goldie’s sense of home. With a robust childhood full of adventure and freedom, Goldie was surrounded by loved ones and family-in-kind, whose boundless empathy, generosity and kindness always cultivated opportunity and belonging.
From an early age, Goldie was an active and talented student with passions and pursuits that spanned across scholastic and extracurricular lines — a mathematician, champion chess player, star ballerina, accomplished athlete and more. Goldie kept an incredibly active roster and was both a competitive and recreational player in softball, basketball, soccer and cheerleading. Her trophies, ribbons and medals commemorate lifelong friendships that grew among teammates and coaches alike.
Goldie graduated from Deer Isle-Stonington High School in 2010, one year ahead of her elementary school classmates, and attended Husson University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2014. Throughout her career, Goldie was known for her compassion and kindness toward all. She worked in residential care, skilled nursing and adolescent behavioral therapy.
With a fondness for fashion and collectibles, Goldie assembled a princess-worthy closet and handbag collection that rivaled a Fifth Avenue showroom. Her obsession with premium denim led her to create Boyce’s Boutiques, a specialty apparel shop with locations in Blue Hill and Bar Harbor that ran for three seasons from 2016 to 2018. Goldie defined family in a language of love over lineage and was unwavering in her devotion to this inner circle.
Goldie was predeceased by her mother, Bernadette Fairfax. She leaves behind her chocolate Lab Sadie; her brother Walter Fairfax; and the beloved Grindle family, who’s endless endearment she truly cherished — Suzette, Peter, Abigail and Sam. Goldie’s extended family includes aunts, uncles and cousins across the U.S. and Mexico, and deep kindred friendships that completed her sphere.
Beyond all accolades and titles, Goldie was best known for her vibrant smile and open heart. Goldie’s competitive spirit lives on in our hearts, and her infectious laugh echoes across the bay.
A celebration of life will be held at The Farmhouse Inn, Blue Hill, from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8. Family and friends are invited to gather, share memories and honor her journey.
