Marshall Holt Smith

Marshall Holt Smith, age 97, resident at Morningside Assisted Living Chillicothe, Mo., passed away on Monday, Aug. 15, 2022, at Morningside Nursing in Chillicothe, Mo.

Born the eldest son of Carl “Dewey” Smith and Clara G. Phillips Smith in Lamoine, Maine on March 16, 1925, he was a graduate of Ellsworth High School in Ellsworth, Maine Class of 1943.

He joined the U.S. Navy as a seaman in 1945, and served in the South Seas during WWII. Upon military discharge in 1946, he was in the reserves for four years. He worked for the Union Trust Bank as head teller and Miami Beach First National Bank and moved to Chillicothe to work for Citizens Bank. He moved to Brookfield, Mo., where he began his long career with Prudential Insurance Company as an agent in 1963, and retired in Chillicothe as a manager in 1989.

His true love was music, and he sang and played bass fiddle with dance bands, sang in community chorus, Methodist Church choirs, weddings and funerals throughout his lifetime in both Chillicothe and Brookfield, Mo. He also loved golf and gardening.

He was the oldest living American Legion member of Brookfield, long time Kiwanis member and served on the Brookfield School Board. He was also on the City Council Development Committee that initiated the Chillicothe Golf Course.

Survivors include his daughter, Marshallyn Shah and husband Ashwin of Willis, Texas, and son, Mark Smith and wife Beverly of Leonardtown, Maryland. He also is survived by stepdaughters Cheryl Bradley and husband John; Carol Ballard and husband, Mike; Beverly Staley and husband Gerry and Barbara Buckallew and husband Greg. He was preceded in death by two wonderful wives, Dorothy P Smith and Rogene Hayen Smith. He also was preceded in death by all his siblings, Carl Smith, Wayne Smith and Carol Schwartz.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Trinity United Methodist Church, Chillicothe United Methodist Church, Linn County Community Chorus or Brookfield R-3 High School Music Department may be left at or mailed to Wright Funeral Home, P.O. Box 496, Brookfield, MO 64628.
