ACTON, MASS. — 1929-2016. Beloved husband of Joan N. Gardner, passed away at Emerson Hospital March 22, 2016. He was born in Bangor, son of Frank Sawyer and Linda Makanna. Children: William D. Sawyer, Constance Sawyer, and Faith Tindle. Stepchildren: George Gardner and Sarah Goerges. Grandchildren: Maija Sawyer, Nicholas Goerges, Emily Goerges. Predeceased by brothers Richard and Philip Sawyer. Education: Buckingham Brown and Nichols, Harvard College 1951, Harvard Law 1954. Career: Massachusetts Bar, U.S. District Court Massachusetts, U.S. Court of Military Appeals, U.S. Supreme Court, Palmer and Dodge, 1958-1961, Sawyer, Burlingham, Tucker and Salloway, 1961-1985, Dicara, Selig, Sawyer, and Holt, 1985-1990, Clarkin, Sawyer and Phillips, 1990-2009, White and Williams, 2010-2013. A public memorial service was held on Saturday March 26, 2016, in the Acton Congregational Church, 12 Concord Rd., Acton, MA 01720, with a reception to follow at the church.
