Maria K. Dupuy of Ellsworth passed away on August 31, 2022. She was 71. Born March 28, 1951, in Budapest, Hungary, Maria came to the United States with her parents (Frank Kovacs, Sr. and Maria Kovacs) and brother (Frank) during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Maria grew up in Connecticut until moving permanently to Maine in February 1977 with her husband and two children.

After working for many years at Zayre in Ellsworth as well as True Value Hardware, she was a retail clerk selling clothing at Alice’s Fashions and later Melanie’s, both in Ellsworth. It was here she was able to hone her gift of sewing, becoming a seamstress to many ladies and men around the Ellsworth area. It was one of Maria’s passions. Another great love in her life was gardening and flowers. She spent her last working years employed at NewLand Nursery, eventually getting her certification as a Master Maine Gardener. She loved her work there and was extremely helpful to her customers as well as a friend to many. Her home on the Bangor Road was always filled with beautiful flowers, shrubs and vegetable gardens in the warmer months of Maine. She took pride in her work and was usually up before the chickens, weeding and pruning and loving her plants. Maria was also a dynamo in the kitchen and when she had time to cook, would often cook for ten people. Her meals were delicious, and her family never went hungry, even in tough times.

In February of 2009, Maria suffered a massive stroke that left her unable to fully walk or talk again. Maria, a true warrior, made the best of her circumstance and learned to do many things with her left hand. Even during her time at Courtland, she tended to many of the plants and flowers there. She also became the world’s best pen pal, spending countless hours carefully writing notes and cards for her family and friends both near and far. It was never an easy life for her, but her kind heart became evident very quickly to the staff and other residents.

Maria is survived by her son, Marc F. Dupuy of Ellsworth; her daughter, Christine M. Dupuy, temporarily of Bangor; her grandson Max; her brother Attila Kovacs of Ellsworth; sister Aniko Giampetruzzi of Kansas; special sister-in-law Joann of Ellsworth, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, brother Frank Jr, brother Peter Kovacs and her companion and love of 25 years, Rod Spinney.

I would like to thank the staff at Courtland for taking care of Mom and providing her the comfort at the end that she so greatly deserved. Maria will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.

There will be a private family gathering at a later date.
