Brooksville
Albert G. Varnum, Jr., 76, of Brooksville, passed away September 1, 2022 at his home after a long, valiant struggle with cancer.
Born August 1, 1946, in Sedgwick, Maine, the oldest son of Albert, Sr. and Phyllis (Douglas), Albert grew up camping and hunting in the surrounding woods and fields in Sedgwick. Albert graduated from George Stevens Academy in 1964 and graduated from Husson College in 1969 with a B.S. in accounting. He enlisted in the Air National Guard 1968-1974, doing his basic training in Texas. Albert worked as an accountant for seven years, then went back to doing what he loved, being outdoors and working with his hands. He worked his lobster boat fishing out of Naskeag in Brooklin, dug many bushels of clams from the Salt Pond, and could rake 40 bushels of blueberries in one day during blueberry season. Albert worked as a carpenter for Jon D. Woodward & Sons in Sedgwick and worked at several boat yards as a finish carpenter. Albert loved riding his motorcycle and was an amateur astronomer.
Albert married his second wife, Susan A. Black, March 7, 1991. The couple with two of their children moved to Michigan for a short time, then moved back to Maine, making their home in Brooksville for the next 31 years. Albert and Susan did everything together, painting houses, crab fishing in Eggemoggin Reach, and enjoyed their many gardens. Camping was a favorite pastime of theirs, always taking children and grandchildren with them. Eventually they bought a permanent campsite in Western Maine, which they have enjoyed together for the past 20 years.
Albert is survived by his wife, Susan; their daughter Katey-Ann and grandson Joseph; daughter Becky, her husband Roy and granddaughter Annette; grandson Jonathan and his fiancé Bryce; daughter Tami, her husband Scott, and grandson Philip; son Albert III, his wife Brenda and grandchildren Elizabeth, Victoria, and Albert IV; his brother Horace and his wife Noella; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother and father Albert, Sr. and Phyllis Varnum and father-in law Richard Black. Graveside services will be announced at a later date.
