Judith Kaplan de Romoet, of Boca Raton, Fla., died July 1, 2022, at 82. Born in Boston, Judith grew up in Fairfield, Conn., and lived in New York, Milwaukee and Penobscot before settling in Boston in the 1970s, where she lived for many years.
Judith had a clever sense of humor, often trenchant but always engaging, reserving special sarcasm for those in government she believed worked against the common good. She appreciated fine cuisine (especially when it was followed by something chocolate for dessert) and had an impressive knowledge of classical music, particularly the chamber repertoire. In her own words a contented latter-day Victorian, Judith eschewed internet connectivity for reading, listening to music and watching British mysteries. Her preferred reading material was contemporary essays and literary novels, though the number of books in her home attests to her broad and eclectic interests.
Though Judith was content to spend time by herself — she would say that she was happy in her own company — she nevertheless enjoyed her old friends, sharing long phone calls and visits filled with reminiscences, laughter and social commentary. While Judith lived in Boca Raton for 24 years, her heart was in Blue Hill and its surrounding region. Determinedly, every June she loaded her car with audio books, cooking supplies and lots of regional paper maps, setting off for the long drive to Blue Hill, where she would spend the summers. It was a destination that made her so joyful she could forget the arduous trek up the entire East Coast of the country. Once in Blue Hill, she often stayed in a rented house steps from the local public library, a place she spent hours of pleasurable time.
Judith’s first marriage, to A. David Schwartz, ended in in divorce, while her second husband, her beloved John deRomoet, preceded her in death in 1997. She is survived by her daughter Rebecca Schwartz, Rebecca’s husband, Timothy Truel, and her two grandsons, Aaron and Jeremiah Truel.
