Irene Harriman Doucette, 93, passed away on June 23, 2022. Irene was a lifelong resident of Bucksport. She was born in Bangor March 9, 1929, to Malcolm Harriman and Pauline (Dorr) Crowley.
As a child, Irene contracted polio and was not expected to live past her teenage years. Later, she was told by doctors that she would be unable to have children. However, Irene defied the odds and lived to the age of 93 and had two sons.
Irene was a fighter and a caregiver to so many over the years. Irene was a great friend and companion, a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, an independent free thinker and a jokester. She had a sharp sense of humor and was able to incorporate sarcasm with a smile that let you know it was all in good fun!
Up until the age of 85, when Irene was still able to live independently, most mornings you would find her sharing coffee and visiting with her neighbors, friends or family members. She loved to read and could finish a book in a day. Even toward the later stages of dementia, she loved to discuss politics and was up on current events. She had the ability to find the positive in most people and political figures regardless of their political affiliation or ideology.
Irene was truly an original who will be greatly missed.
Irene is survived by her sons, Stephen Doucette (Bucksport) and Wayne Doucette (Everett, Wash.). She has two granddaughters, Stephanie Doucette-Baker and Erin Doucette-Brown; six great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Chelsea, Aidan, Sophia, Taylor and Ava, and three great-great grandchildren, Haylee, Ronin and Carson. She has one niece, Lisa Harriman, and two nephews, Brian Harriman and Malcolm Harriman. Those who have passed include her husband, Edmund Doucette, her companion for several years, George Pooler, as well as her brother Larry Harriman, sister-in-law Charlotte Davis Harriman and nephew David Harriman.
The burial service will be held at St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Cemetery (Silver Lake Road, Bucksport) on July 30 at 11 a.m. Irene’s family will provide flowers. For anyone wishing to donate toward funeral expenses, please reach out directly to Stephanie Doucette (stephdva@gmail.com).
