Ellsworth
Laurie Beckett Williams, 81, died May 25, 2022, at Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital, Ellsworth. She was born on Aug. 28, 1940, the daughter of Alexander W. and Matilda M. (Schmidt) Beckett.
Laurie’s family moved to Trenton in 1948. She attended Bar Harbor schools and graduated from Bar Harbor High School in 1958. Then in 1962 she graduated from Simmons College, Boston, with a B.S. in mathematics. Laurie taught math at Bar Harbor High School and Mount Desert Island High School for 34½ years retiring in 2000.
After retiring, she became the U.S. coordinator for the U.S./German Biomedical Science Exchange Program. She also served on the Woodlawn Museum (The Black House) board of trustees for four terms. Laurie served for 12 years as a court advocate for The Next Step Domestic Violence Program.
Laurie is survived by her beloved husband of 30 years, Raymond L. Williams; a brother, Douglas A. Beckett, and wife, Marie, of Old Town; nephews Peter Beckett of Bar Harbor and Troy Smith of Old Town; nieces Kerrie Beckett and spouse Cara Pelletier of Bangor and Amy Woodbury and husband, Joshua, of Old Town.
Services will be private.
