On April 27, 2022, Ronald T. Hawes of Ellsworth passed away at his home.
Ron was born in Worcester, Mass., on Jan. 12, 1944, the son of Frank T. and Thelma M. (Ringer) Hawes.
In 1976, Ron moved his family to Maine and his wife often commented that “it was the best decision we ever made.” Over the years Ron worked for Ray Plumbing, Ray Builders, Mel Anderson, Chuck Bucklin and ran Hawes Remodeling. He served on the Ellsworth Recreation Committee for two terms, and he was VERY active in the Ellsworth softball league as a player and an umpire. In fact, at the round-robin dedication of Demeyer field he was the fourth batter up, bases loaded and “yup,” he hit the first official grand slam. On another fun note … he won the first ‘rubber ducky.’
In October of 2021, he realized a dream and was able to take his sons on a successful moose hunt in Rangeley. Ron traveled around the country and overseas, which gave him much pleasure and many happy memories, especially salmon fishing off the coast of Alaska.
Ron was very generous with his time and voluntarily helped when he saw a need. He could be found prepping food or driving cars hither and yon.
Ron was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Bob and Jim.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Karen; their three children, Brenda Ferraro of Brookfield, Mass., Thomas Hawes and his wife, Cindy, of Ellsworth, and Michael Hawes and his wife, Kathy, of Surry; his five grandchildren he loved dearly, Derek, LeeAnn, Ben, JT and Nick; great-grandson Jonathan and many nieces and nephews, both near and far, who will miss “Grumpy” and “Uncle Bear.”
The friends he found in Maine became family “found along the way,” who were all so supportive when the need arose.
Please join us on Thursday, May 5, 2022, from 4-7 p.m. with a short service at 6:30 at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth.
Inurnment will be private at a later date convenient for the family.
