William Benjamin Leonardi Jr. (Bill), 85, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 27, 2022, at home after a period of declining health. His wife, Susan, was at his side. Bill was born on Dec. 22, 1936, in Boston to Emily (McKenzie) and William B. Leonardi Sr.
All his life Bill remembered friends made along the way — from Rivers Country Day School, Dublin Academy, Portsmouth Priory, summers at Kennebunk Beach, a stint in the U.S. Army, the family bars and restaurants in Boston where he worked, in Guilderland where he and Susan lived for a time, and finally in Prospect Harbor. He was a generous, loyal man who could tell a great story. He loved animals, and in 2008 he and Susan founded Hardy’s Friends, named after their beloved Newfoundland, a nonprofit that helps families in Gouldsboro and Winter Harbor with veterinary and other pet-related expenses. Hardy was just one of many dogs and cats Bill rescued and loved. His cat Lolo Bird was his great pal in his last years.
Bill is survived by his wife of 25 years, Susan Burke, and his sister Concetta Leonardi of Portland. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Robert and daughter Danielle Klaussen.
Susan is very grateful to Dr. Kerry Crowley and the caring staff of the Northern Light Gouldsboro Clinic, the compassionate caregivers of Beacon Hospice and the many friends who have given such loving support.
According to his wishes there will be no service. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Bill’s memory might consider Hardy’s Friends, P.O. Box 63, Prospect Harbor, ME 04669 or the animal welfare organization of your choice.
