Mamaroneck
Edward J. (Jerry) Storey Jr. passed away on March 8, 2022, after a long illness.
Jerry was born on Dec. 7, 1938, in Mamaroneck, N.Y. A graduate of Yale University and Columbia Teachers College, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard and then began his career teaching at a private boys’ academy in western Massachusetts. At the same time, he helped manage Camp Half-Moon in Great Barrington, a family-owned summer camp.
He later transitioned to government service, holding various positions in federal government during his years in Washington, D.C. Specifically, he worked with the Secretary of the Treasury, Francine Neff, under the Ford administration, the Tennessee Valley Authority under the Carter administration and the USAID, developing energy alternatives through hydro and wood pellet replacement of nuclear power. During this time, he fulfilled his love of the outdoors by owning and operating a gentleman’s farm in Culpepper, Va.
Ultimately, he pursued town government, which took him to Maine, including the towns of Princeton, Northeast Harbor and Searsport, and then to Shelburne, Vt., where he lived for the past 8.5 years with his wife, Anna Watson, until his passing. Together, they enjoyed Jerry’s flower garden and supported Shelburne Farms and local dining.
Jerry served on the Shelburne Select Board as a member from March 2016 and then as chair from March 2018 till May 2021. With a wealth of experience from his years as a town manager, Jerry sought to bring civil discourse and a collegial atmosphere to the Shelburne Select Board. The town benefited greatly from his service.
Jerry was previously married to Marian Quante Storey, originally from Savannah, Ga., who passed away in 2012. He is survived by his two children from that marriage: son Edward J. Storey III with his wife, Gabrielle Chamberlain Storey, of Greenville, N.C., and daughter Anne-Marie Storey with husband, John Hamer, and their daughter Zoey of Winterport. He is also survived by his three stepdaughters: Lucy Miller and fiancé Kevin Beaulieu of Burlington, Mass., Natasha Theofanidis with her husband, Paris Theofanidis, and their daughters Alexa and Alyssa Theofanidis of Houston, Texas, and Monica Massaro with husband, Joseph Massaro, and their two daughters, Anna and Karina Massaro, of Bedford, Mass.
A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held at a later date.
