Lamoine

6/3/1958 – 1/9/2022

Cheryl Joy Hurley, 63, passed away on Jan. 9, 2022. She was born in Hartford, Conn., on June 3, 1958, the second child of Shirley L. Cousins and Leonard W. Joy. At age 2 the family moved to Lamoine, the hometown of her father where she would be surrounded by a multitude of aunts, uncles and cousins. Forever that youth would hold fond memories for Cheryl.

She graduated from Sumner High School in 1975 at the age of 16. She attended college at Husson University but left in pursuit of travel and spiritual growth. In 1980, she moved to Virginia to be closer to her sister. There she met Frank Hurley, the love of her life. Determined to obtain a higher education, she attended Norfolk State and received a bachelor’s in accounting. The continued spiritual quest led her and Frank to the Cincinnati, Ohio, area, where she practiced accounting, obtained her master’s and assisted Frank with his business.

In 2009, she was diagnosed with brain cancer and soon would discover she had the hereditary condition MEN 1, the same as her mother. Always a bit feisty and wanting to lead life on her terms, she beat the odds for 12 years and withstood numerous surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation.

She is survived by Frank Hurley, her husband of 40-plus years, her sister Linda Joy Elliott, her favorite cousin/pseudo-sister Theresa Daigle Berlin, their spouses, her niece Joy VanMeter, nephew Jake VanMeter, great-nieces Chloe and Sofia, great-nephew Adam and many cousins.

A spiritual person, there is no doubt that she is in a better place providing comfort to all those she loved and who loved her back.
