DEBLOIS – Stephen S. Torrey, 77, of Deblois died Sept. 30, 2016, after a courageous seven-month battle with cancer. He was born Dec. 25, 1938, in Annapolis, Md., to Russell and Hester (Young) Torrey.
Steve served in the U.S. Army, stationed in France and Germany. While there, he traveled throughout Luxembourg, Belgium and The Netherlands. Steve was a proud believer in our nation’s military and was always willing to share stories of his time served, and of the extensive knowledge of military history that he researched throughout his life. He was a hard worker, working 32 years in the water works industry in Ellsworth, and was the owner/operator of Torrey Army Surplus and Torrey Fire Equipment. As a successful volunteer fireman for most of his life, Steve assisted with forest fires until the age of 74. He was a proud member of the American Legion Post No. 8. Taking up many interests throughout his travels, Steve was an avid reader and was very passionate about his knowledge of military genre. He enjoyed genealogy, fishing, hunting, exploring the Maine woods with his best buddy, Freya the cat.
Steve is survived by three children, Linda Torrey Hodgkins and husband, Jeff, Teresa Torrey, and Russell Torrey; eleven grandchildren, Allyssa, Amber, Kimberly, Katie, Julie, Tyler, Phoenix, Lance, Josh, Bradley and Megan; along with his sister Charlotte Boyd and husband, Joe. Steve was predeceased by his parents; brothers Robert, Maurice and Bruce; and his daughter Nancy Gale.
A graveside service will be held for family and close friends at a later date in Winter Harbor.
