On Nov. 21, 2021, Joseph Sheehan, an extraordinary husband, father and grandfather, passed away in Orono.
Joe was born in Springfield, Mass., on Dec. 19, 1930, to Thomas Edward Sheehan and Theresa Kiely Sheehan. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a BA in history, and he received his MA from the University of Connecticut in political science. He taught history at West Springfield High School for 26 years, where he inspired and motivated hundreds of students. Joe married the love of his life, Joan Gorman Sheehan, on Oct. 18, 1962, and they raised two daughters, Kathleen and Linda.
An avid reader, Joe made friends with the librarian in any town in which he lived. He always had a large stack of books by his side that ranged from histories to political commentaries to mysteries. Joe loved a good round of golf and often could be found at the first tee early in the morning. His favorite course was Grindstone Neck in Winter Harbor. He took at least one walk every day, and people who saw him could identify him by the Irish cap he always wore on his head.
Joe was predeceased by his brothers Thomas Sheehan, the Rev. James Sheehan, S.J. and the Rev. John Sheehan, S.J. He is survived by his wife, Joan; his daughters, Kathleen Sheehan and Linda Sheehan; his son-in-law, Michael Davidson; his grandchildren, Caroline and Andrew Lauria-Sheehan; and his sister, Elizabeth Sheehan Rae.
Details regarding a funeral will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe’s memory can be made to the Ellsworth Public Library, http://www.ellsworth.lib.me.us/friends-of-the-library.
