Winter Harbor

Irving S. Ray (Snookie) passed away at his home in Winter Harbor on Oct. 26, 2021. He was born on Dec. 4, 1929, to Vineyard and Faustina Ray, who predeceased him.

Snookie retired from Naval Security Group Activity in Winter Harbor as a fireman many years ago. He then drove a truck for A.R. Whitten & Son until he could no longer. There are many stories to be told. For those who knew him well, rest assured that he is probably still “stirring the pot.”

He was predeceased by his wife, Althea, son Charles Hurd, grandson Joshua Shafer, brother Robert Ray (Kay), sister Juanita Stanwood (Lawrence) and brother-in-law Neil Dow. He is survived by son Gary Ray, daughter Roseanne Shafer, grandson Brent Hurd, wife, Cheryl, and great-grandchildren Colby and Kylee Hurd and granddaughter Keri Camoila. He is also survived by his sister Christine Dow and many nieces and nephews. With the love and compassionate care of Darlene Wallace, he was able to spend his last year at home, which is right where he wanted to be. Many thanks to Palliative Care and Hospice. You are a godsend.

For those who would like to send a gift in Dad’s memory, we ask that you might consider Ida Lockhart House, which is a group home where Gary resides. The address is 76 Park St., Ellsworth, ME 04605.

There will be a private graveside service for family.
