Florence M. Smith

obit-smith-1BAR HARBOR – Florence M. Smith, 90, died Sept. 17, 2016, in Bar Harbor. She was born Nov. 19, 1925, in Lynn, Mass., the daughter of Cornelius Bernard and Ellen Winfred (Pendergast) Healey.

For many years, Florence worked as a hostess at the Acadia Restaurant in Bar Harbor, for the Boisvert family.

Florence was a communicant of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, serving as a Eucharistic minister, a choir member and she assisted the church at the services at Sonogee Rehab and Living Center. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, a past president of The Melvin Belmont residence association, and a volunteer at the YWCA Food Pantry. Florence remembered all her family and acquaintances each year with cards.

She is survived by her children; Sister Kathleen Smith, RSM of Portland, Russell T. Smith and wife, Edith, of North Palm Beach, Fla., Maureen Kane and husband, Lyman “Joey” Jr., of Bar Harbor, Eileen Bartlett of Portland and Christine Walsh and husband, Craig, of Gouldsboro; brother Robert F. Healey and wife, Annette, of Saugus, Mass., sister Marjorie Kane of Palm Beach, Fla., 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Florence was predeceased by: husband, Robert T. Smith, two sons, Mark T. and Matthew T. Smith and a sister, Doris Broll and husband, John.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 21 Ledgelawn Ave., Bar Harbor, with Father John Skehan officiating. There will be a reception immediately following the Mass at St. Saviour’s Episcopal Parish Hall. Private interment will be at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Bar Harbor.

Contributions in Florence’s memory may be made to Island Connections, 15 Eagle Lake Road, Bar Harbor; Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County, 14 McKenzie Ave., Ellsworth; or the Bar Harbor Food Pantry, 36 Mt. Desert St., Bar Harbor.
