Ellie passed peacefully on July 26 in hospice care in Newport, R.I.
Born in Belfast to Richard and Lillian Whitcomb, she has one surviving sibling — Gertie Whitcomb of Waldo. She graduated from Crosby High School, a member of the National Honor Society, in 1953. She went on to Husson College, completing her program in one year with honors.
Ellie met her surviving husband, Earle M. Stratton (Enfield, Conn., formerly Bangor), at a Husson College dance and had 66 years of marriage. Their children are: Brent Stratton and Mary Baba, Sandra and Russell Cox, Jeff and Lynn Stratton and Ann Stratton. She had many grandchildren: Matthew Cox and Alissa, Christopher Cox, Scott Stratton, Michael Stratton and Cathleen Stratton. She had one great-granddaughter, Stella Cox. Dwight and Pat Marshall and Laurel and Everett Maddocks helped Ellie and she had many other nieces and nephews in Maine and around the U.S.
Ellie worked as a dishwasher in the old Darcy’s building on Main Street and at the Candy Store. Moving with Earle to Enfield, Conn., she worked in an office, as a crossing guard, in retail and for the U.S. post office in Hartford, Conn. She loved the outdoors, flowers and reading the paper, but mostly shared her love of family generously.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 11:30 a.m. at the Forest Hill Cemetery on Lamoine Beach Road followed by a luncheon at Helen’s Restaurant in Ellsworth.
