Mary Jane Hammill Carter was born Sept. 14, 1942, in Lincolnville, Maine. She died at EMMC hospital in Bangor on Aug. 27, 2021. She was raised in Lincolnville and Camden by her mother, Hester Calderwood Hammill of Camden, Maine (1902-1982).

Mary Jane was the valedictorian of her high school class and was always intellectually curious. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Blackburn College in Illinois before moving to New York to pursue a career in publishing and writing. There, she met and married Lyle Dean Linder (1940-2017). Their daughter, Leslie Joan Linder, survives them.

After returning to Maine in the late seventies, Mary Jane began working for a Rockland attorney and this led her into a career as a freelance paralegal and legal secretary. She specialized in real estate title searches, and she worked with dozens of attorneys in Hancock County as well as Penobscot, Washington and Waldo. Her career in this field lasted well over forty years.

Mary Jane was a spiritual, kind and thoughtful person. She loved animals and rescued many (especially cats). She remained a writer throughout life and to the end always had many exciting and interesting ideas.

A celebration of life followed by a reception will take place on Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Castine Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 10 a.m. Arrangements are under the care of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Services Bucksport. (mitchelltweedie-young.com)
